On August 18, 1944, USS Rasher entered a violent night battle against a heavily escorted Japanese convoy in the South China Sea, relying on surface-search radar to track targets through darkness and bad weather. Under Commander Henry G. Munson, the American submarine used its speed, radar information, and repeated surface attacks to strike the convoy, sink major transports and tanker targets, and ultimately destroy the Japanese escort carrier Taiyo. This video examines how radar transformed the tactical equation, why Rasher remained on the surface despite the danger from escorts and depth charges, and how a glowing electronic display allowed one submarine to keep hunting ships it could barely see with the human eye.
