I wouldn’t want to heat those houses, change the lightbulbs, or clean those windows. I prefer an older home with rooms.

Newer homes almost never have soul. They lack balance and symmetry. We bought an 1880s Victorian with a classic layout and I feel peace here every day.

I just bought my first home, and had sworn off newer homes. Got a house built in 1961, and there's separate rooms, a long hallway, and the main bedroom is allllll the way in the back of the house. I love it.

Finally, someone says this.
I thought I was crazy for thinking that these homes just look good on pictures but are not comfortable living in.

The open plan layout saves the builder time and money and is the main reason we are coerced into it.

I am an introvert. I want the inside of my home to look as much like a network of caves as possible.

My house is 144 years old 😊Yes there's constant maintenance issues, but the old place makes my soul feel good every time I come home 🤗

Biggest thing here that I would never buy is a house with bedrooms right off an open concept area. Either a long hall or a second story. Nothing worse than hanging out with people with kids after bedtime and you just have to whisper the whole time because the kids are asleep 4ft away behind a paper thin door.

Our 1944 Minimal Traditional is decorated dark academia, I call it "gentlemen's lounge/library" I've been told it's a sanctuary by a newer home owner. Warm lighting, lots of books & bookcases, dark woods and comfy chairs, antiques. ❤ You are so right!

Our home was built in 1979. Four level back split. I love what my husband calls: "Get away room."
The bedrooms are on a different floor altogether. We renovated the main floor to open concept, which is great for family time, but we spend most time in the lower den, a real cave of coziness. Now I know why!

One more reason to dislike the open floor plan. Since your number of walls is vastly decreased, it becomes really hard to arrange furniture in a coherent and attractive way. Also, if everything is very open, you don't have the closet space that is necessary, either.

I hate open plan. It's just a giant studio apartment.

I hate the new open floor plans. More negatives than positives. One big, "everything" room. Messy, noisy and no privacy

@Gruene2010 11 months ago

The reason for the bedroom downstairs is that, as we get older, it’s easier to have the essential rooms downstairs and easier to navigate. We moved from a house with master bedroom upstairs to one downstairs because it is easier for us to maneuver. I did like being upstairs for the younger years.

I happen to love high ceilings, open concept, large window walls, natural light. To each their own I suppose.

We have a 100 year old mill house and I love how separate the rooms are. Like a cozy den

I've been saying for years how much I don't like the open concept design. The kitchen represents work for me (cooking and cleaning). When I sit down to relax in front of the TV, I don't want the kitchen in the room with me.

@sco1889 1 year ago

We are just completing a full scale remodel and did a completely closed off kitchen. After living in one of those open concept “everything in one room” house…I cannot wait! Separate rooms creates space for more character, design, and calm.

The higher ceiling used to be the norm in old homes.
My little home built in 1900 had 9 foot high ceilings and I love it.
I grew up in a home with 10 foot high ceilings and miss it.
When I am in a home with 8 foot high ceilings I feel trapped.

The large windows are amazing.
Love it.
I don't turn on lights in my house any more than I need.

The best home designs and layout were the way the old mansion and castle style homes.
The private living spaces were always on the second and third levels of the home and typically has some form of hallway separating the bedrooms and other private areas.

I'm never comfortable in a place when there's nowhere to feel like you have some privacy.
It's exhausting.
I always feel like I have to watch everything I say & do.
Sometimes you wanna have a private moment alone or with someone else, or you just want to get away from another person.
