The Halo universe is populated by a vast, complex hierarchy of alien species, many of which were forcibly absorbed into the Covenant empire. The Sangheili (Elites) and San'Shyuum (Prophets) founded the Covenant after a bloody war, establishing a rigid caste system that exploited species like the methane-breathing Unggoy (Grunts) for endless infantry and the avian Kig-Yar (Jackals) for scouting and piracy. Other species were utilized for far more terrifying purposes; the massive, worm-colony Lekgolo were weaponized into walking tanks known as Hunters, while the Jiralhanae (Brutes) were elevated to shock troops, a decision that ultimately fractured the Covenant entirely and sparked the Great Schism.

Beyond the Covenant, the galaxy’s history is defined by the ancient, tragic conflicts of incredibly advanced precursor civilizations. Millions of years ago, the god-like Precursors were driven to near-extinction by their own creations, the Forerunners, who later discovered that the Precursor's degraded, vengeful remains had mutated into the galaxy-consuming parasite known as the Flood. To stop the Flood, the Forerunners built the Halo Array to wipe out all sentient life, leaving behind biomechanical Huragok (Engineers) and seeded populations, including humanity—who were once an advanced, spacefaring empire before the Forerunners violently devolved them as punishment for an ancient war. Even the wildlife on the Halo installations, like the eyeless, predatory blind wolves, hints at the strange, curated ecosystems left behind by these ancient architects.
