in this video, we talk about six kitchen sink locations that can create expensive problems, including island sinks, corner sinks, sinks placed too close to the range, exterior-wall sinks, sinks under poorly planned windows, and locations that leave you facing away from the room. We also discussed why sink placement is a plumbing anchor, how rough-ins, venting, drain slopes, insulation, counter space, and sightlines affect daily life, and why involving your designer, contractor, and plumber early can help prevent costly change orders and renovation regrets.

The classic sink location under the window goes back to the days when the kids were playing outside and the stay-at-home mom wanted to be able to see them as she was making dinner from scratch. NOW, everything is completely different and someone is rushing through cooking after work while the kids are doing homework.

My 1922 kitchen windows faced due west and are quite high. The sink had been right under them, which meant my grandparents had to have blinds or shades to keep the afternoon sun out of their cooks' eyes, and I would, too, so why have windows at all? I moved the sink across the room to a half wall facing the TV in the den, which worked well when I still watched TV instead of youtube. The washer/dryer ended up under the windows, and I had to have studor vents for both sink & washer. The washer emptying makes the sink one gurgle sometimes.

My house has the sink in the corner with a large window across the counter and 23 inches to the stove. The storage underneath is limited. I never liked the sink in an island unless it was a prep sink. And if there's more than me in the home there better be help in that kitchen cleanng up unless the kids are too young. No one gets off the hook if they are an adult unless they are physically disabled or sick. I was gut the kitchen when we bought the house in 92 and move the sink to be under the window. That never happened. And after 92 we never had guests in our home to eat other than a couple of times. It's NOT a kitchen of love or practical or anyplace you want to spend time in. Get in get out as fast as possible. Awful. I want to face a garden NOT the interior of a home or people.
