Moin! It’s wonderful that the two of you visited my hometown of Cuxhaven. As for the paid city beaches in the Duhnen, Döse, and Sahlenburg districts: that’s a rip-off by the resort administration designed to squeeze even more money out of tourists, and it has been a bone of contention for years because locals are also charged disproportionately high fees. However, there are plenty of beaches outside the city that are completely free of charge. A return visit to Cuxhaven would definitely be worthwhile, by the way, since you missed out on many of the truly interesting places and museums. Next time, it would be best to find a "local guide." I would also recommend visiting the islands of Neuwerk and Heligoland. Heligoland is home to the so-called "Knieper"—a special type of lobster found only underwater at the base of the island—which tastes absolutely delicious.

I‘d recommend visit one of the islands. Spiekeroog for example has a small little cozy village and a great beach.

Connected but very different ... The North Sea is filled with heavy, dense, salty oceanic water. Conversely, the Baltic Sea is fed by over 250 rivers and experiences restricted outflow. This turns the Baltic into a giant brackish estuary.

You absolutely have to visit an East Frisian island in the North Sea. They have real beaches there with surf that makes swimming fun.
Juist is one of the most beautiful islands, but Spiekeroog and Langeoog are great, too - as are all the other islands in the area. (Norderney is a bit too touristy.)
Or head to a North Frisian island. Amrum would be my top pick. (Forget about Sylt.)

Well, I suggest heading to the Wadden Islands; that way, you’ve got sandy beaches on the north side and the North Sea right there! Staying in the dunes on the islands makes more sense for the two of you. Start at Borkum and hop your way from left to right, ending up at Spiekeroog. That definitely gives you more of a true North Sea vibe!

In Italy in summer months access to some beach come with a fee, and then getting a deckchair and an umbrella costs extra—around 15 to 20 euros a day. That’s on top of parking. Other private beaches considered more upscale can cost up to 100 euros per person per day. Of course, especially in the south, the beaches are packed, and the beach club operators try to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend visiting Italy in the summer, particularly the south

Landlubbers! (Landratten) The levees are never called "Damm" in Germany. It's always "Deich".
A Damm is used to close off a body of water as on a hydroelectric dam. Or it is used to elevate a road or track above the lower land or the sea. Like the Hindenburgdamm connecting the mainland with the (former) island of Sylt. A levee, as in Deich, is used to protect the land behind it from getting flooded during storms or high water. Like the levees around New Orleans. Or along most of the North German coast.

I would recommend Helgoland. But don't make the mistake and go for a day trip. Stay at least three days.

One unusual sight I have seen in the area is the Eider Barrage at the mouth of the Eider River. It is a bi-directional dam that you can also drive thru.

The North Sea is a different experience when you visit any of the Island that are farther out beyond the shallow Wadden Sea, like Norderney, Amrum, Sylt, etc.
There you have beaches with way less shallow water, waves and more Dunes.
Another, more natural Beach Area by Cuxhaven is in Sahlenburg.
