The Back Story…

Elmore Court is owned by 36 year old Anselm Guise, a Dance DJ who inherited the house in May 2007 when his Uncle John died unexpectedly. Anselm didn’t always get on with his Uncle but the pair bonded when Uncle John was on his death bed. Elmore Court has been in the Guise family for over 700 years.

Anselm has thought of doing weddings, events and even opening a pub but his favourite idea is to convert the old kitchens into a space for residential cookery courses.
Anselm feels that it’s down to him to make the estate work and get it to “wash its face”. It has been open to the public in the past, in a very limited way, but Anselm’s keen to run it as a private enterprise in the future.

Ruth’s First Visit…

On Ruth’s first visit she spent time with Ans discussing his plans for weddings, the pub and the cookery school. She established that Ans feels the weight of his ancestors quite heavily and feels under pressure to do the right thing. He’s also living in a small section of the house, not quite able to take control. Ruth investigated the stable block that Ans plans to turn into accommodation for his cookery school and ruled it too small and unsuitable. She noted the amount of clutter and rubbish in every corner of the house.

Ruth went out into the region, to put the house into context, and visited a local cookery school, proving to herself that Ans idea could be viable, but that it was essential that he make space for good quality accommodation. Ruth also visited a Cotswolds hotel whose stylish décor and facilities attract hundreds of high end guests every year.

Ruth’s Verdict…

Ans needs to take control of the house and stop feeling scared.
He needs to manage the estate himself, instead of paying expensive advisors
Clear up the whole house, get in auctioneers and sell off anything he doesn’t need.
Clear out the old kitchens plan to do a trial run of the cookery school
Think big – the cookery school needs to be on a greater scale, like a high end hotel. Ans needs to modernise and re-decorate the great rooms and accommodate the students within the house

Catch Up…

Ans cracked on with the work between Ruth’s visits, getting in a team of auctioneers to value the clutter and clear the house. He also started to plan the cookery school with his sister in law, who runs her own school in Bristol.

Midterms…

When Ruth returns to Elmore she will help him interview potential interior designers and help to plan a style for the Cookery School accommodation. She will find out whether he’s moved out of his student flat and taken possession of the house as a whole. They will revue the clutter that Ans is sending to auction and discuss plans for the trial run of the school that will take place to coincide with Ruth’s final visit.
