All organic substances and biomolecules contain carbon. The human body is composed of approximately 20% carbon.

Although carbon is an abundant element in the universe, it is not the most abundant. Hydrogen and helium are much more numerous. Why isn't our body made of oxygen or nitrogen, even though they are abundant in the air?

Or, for strength, why didn't nature create our bodies from metallic elements, like Transformers? They seem much stronger and more durable.

Living things are some kind of structural system that can absorb energy from the environment. Then, that energy is used to resist the increase in entropy, or the decay of the body, trying to maintain its existence for as long as possible.

It also uses that energy to perceive its surroundings, move its body, find ways to survive, or escape danger, all for the same goal: to preserve its existence for as long as possible.

But living things cannot fight the second law of thermodynamics, or the increase in entropy, forever. Everything must eventually decay; we can only slow it down.

And the solution that living things choose is that when they can no longer prolong their body, they allocate a portion of their energy to create a new body identical to themselves, in order to continue their existence. To copy themselves, living things must have what is called a genetic code, which stores information on how to copy themselves.

Absorbing energy, repairing the body, perceiving danger, and storing information for self-copying are all complex processes that require various molecules in the body with complex and diverse structures to perform these functions.

And this is the origin of the first property of the elements that make up the body of a living thing: they must be able to create complex and diverse molecules.

The next property concerns the hypothesis of the origin of life. Before the first living things appeared, before the theory of evolution of living things... This explains how living things change over time.

Before biology, it was chemistry. Before the first living things, there was a phenomenon called chemical evolution, which indicates chemical changes over time.

Chemical evolution explains the process by which simple, uncomplicated chemical molecules naturally develop into more complex chemical molecules, much like the evolution of living things, starting from simple cells and becoming the highly complex organisms we see today.
