The discipline begins first thing Monday morning: upon arrival, students' bags are searched, and their cell phones are confiscated for the week. Uniforms, discipline, a cult of performance—the Tersac school in the Gironde region prides itself on its old-fashioned approach to education. From 6th grade to 12th grade, this private, secular school caters to families who can afford it (tuition costs at least €16,000 per year) and guarantees a 100% pass rate on the baccalaureate exam. The curriculum is unconventional: students discuss current events on news channels in front of 12-year-olds, and learn how to properly serve alcohol in a sophisticated setting. And for the recalcitrant students, there are community service assignments or about twenty push-ups in front of their classmates.
