I kind of dislike when people say things like "you don't get it, you had to be there,", but here I go; if you weren't a Cleveland sports fan back then, it's really impossible to understand what Bernie Kosar has meant to the people here from the moment he declared for the supplemental draft, which was saying he wanted to come to Cleveland. Like others here have said, nobody wanted to come here. I'm not a hero worshipping kind of guy, and I don't wear other guys' jerseys, but if I did I'd put on a number 19 Kosar jersey without a moment's' hesitation, even today. The part of my brain that holds happy sports memories has a lot of Bernie Kosar in it.
I'm from Cleveland and growing up I had Bernie Kosar stats and mentions in media all over my wall. It's crazy thinking back now but the guy was everything to Cleveland. The Cleveland sports bars in my state were all Kosar Jerseys. I remember a sports illustrated article about all the current hall of farmers at a gathering and that had the old tire strung up in the yard for this dinner. Everyone was banging it off the tire until Bernie came up and nailed one after another straight through. I always thought or maybe hoped he would find his way to the hall but I guess he will just have to be there for us Browns fans. We love you Bernie.
Met him in a small town ohio bar. In mid 2000. The line of people who wanted his autograph was crazy. And he was so gracious and cool. Your the best. Bay point if you read this bernie
Yeah, no Super Bowls, but the memories that come flooding when I see the gray Cleveland skies and the muddy turf and Bernie and the rest of the Browns in those great home whites (I hated the brown jerseys) are special. Brings a tear to my eye. I live out west now, and I'd rather be freezing my as* off on a wooden seat in Cleveland than in pampered luxury in SoFi.
Bernie is one of the primary reasons I became a Browns fan in the 1980s. What an awesome leader and an incredibly smart play-caller! If Bernie started and won a Super Bowl with the Browns, I think he would be considered for the HOF.
Thank you Bernie for all you gave. My dad and I fought like crazy when I was a kid in the 1980s growing up in NE Ohio. But on Sunday afternoons in the fall, we would go the old stadium to watch you play, and for three hours every week we would get along. Those are some of my best childhood memories.
I was a guy that looked a lot like Bern. Jim Brown actually called me “big guy” once. I was a Browns season ticket holder during Bernie’s years and I just gotta say thank you. I love you Bernie like all true Clevelanders love you. We will never forget. That TD to Slaughter in the OT win against the Steelers was our Super Bowl. I was on the 35 yard line and my dad and I both cried, thank you!
He was a perfect player for the Browns, he was also awesome, and great w/ the Cleveland community when he was w/ the Browns and still to this day, Cleveland loves Bernie, he was awesome!!
