Guest futons, guest dishes and cushions, spare appliances, towels that have been stored away, spare keys whose purpose is unknown, old pots and pans after replacement, things that someone might use someday.
We'll look at seven types of "just in case" items that are kept as spares, separate from everyday stockpiles.
What we want you to consider isn't the number, but whether they are truly usable in an emergency.
Can you still use futons that have been in the closet for 10 years? Do appliances from 10 years ago still work?
Just having them around doesn't make them spares.
There are three conditions for a spare to be worth keeping:
① A specific situation in which it will be used ② It is in a usable condition immediately ③ A quantity that you can keep track of
Even unused items require management: airing them out, worrying about humidity, and taking up space. Take a look to see if everyday items are being pushed to inconvenient locations just because they are spares.
This isn't about reducing your stockpiles. Disaster preparedness is a separate matter. There's no need to eliminate all spares.
The time to review them is "when you buy something new." Simply not keeping the old items "just in case" will prevent the number of spares from increasing.
Things you can start doing today:
① Look at only one type of item you call a "spare."
② Ask yourself: "What is it for? When will I use it? Is it still usable?"
③ Decide on the necessary number.
Table of Contents:
00:00 Are spares for peace of mind just increasing your management?
00:39 Just having things around doesn't make them spares.
01:27 ① Guest bedding | Are you still keeping the same number as when you had the most guests?
02:51 ② Guest dishes, cushions, and slippers | Use the actual number of guests who have visited recently as a guide.
04:05 ③ Spare appliances that are kept unused | Will they work if you need them today?
05:00 ④ Spare towels that are stored away | Replace them with the ones you're currently using.
06:44 ⑤ Spare keys whose purpose is unclear | Don't keep keys without the actual key itself.
07:26 ⑥ Old pots and pans after replacement | Will you really use these? Will you buy new ones?
08:15 ⑦ Items that "someone might use someday" | Spares have an expiration date
09:15 The difference between stock and spares
09:57 Three conditions for spares that are okay to keep
10:40 Even unused items need "management"
12:27 The right time to review is "when you replace them"
13:07 Three things you don't need to do all at once
13:37 Three things you can start doing today

Representative Director, Life Service Wa Co., Ltd.
A specialist in the Kansai region, handling遺品整理 (estate clearing), 生前整理 (pre-death planning), relocation to nursing homes, hoarder house cleaning, and specialized cleaning.
She shares her experiences from the field, emphasizing "pre-death planning to prevent future problems for yourself and your family."
Because her work involves delving into "the deepest parts of people's lives," she prioritizes building trust with clients. Beyond simply disposing of unwanted items, they have established a unique support system that combines "small-scale moving" (for those relocating to nursing homes) and "pre-death decluttering," reducing the emotional burden on the elderly and their families.
Based on their experience witnessing numerous cases of lonely deaths and hoarder houses, their ultimate goal is to "create a society where specialized cleaning is unnecessary." They use YouTube to share "the reality of the situation" and "what you can do now to prepare" with those who cannot ask for help and with families living far away.
