We’ve lived in rural Maine for about 40 years and are still considered “from away”… and that’s ok… just be respectful and humble and you’ll fit in soon enough.

The growing season differs greatly in the state of Maine. Southern coastal region of Maine has almost a month longer growing season then northern Maine. You forgot to mention the all important black fly season in Maine,

Just because a road is "paved" or "maintained" does not mean it will not tear up your vehicle here. Planning is key here! Go slow and cut your project list in half...you may get some of that done on that reduced list. Mainers are helpful, friendly. and have a "wit" second to none. Thanks so much Jason!!

Maine winters are cold and long. I lived in southern Maine for three years and that was cold enough. Northern Maine is much colder. Now I live in Central Massachusetts and the winters are real, but not nearly as cold as Maine's. It's a beautiful state but you better like snow.

There are A LOT of "from away" folks from the 2021 era. I am native and I married a "from away" lass 15 years ago, but her great-grandparents are buried inn Danforth, which is EXACTLY the first thing I tell other natives when it comes up in conversation 🤣. Take her to MDI in August and she is instantly sympathetic with this chronic xenophobia we suffer from. Love and hate relationship. Hashtag not all folks from away.

Some great info. Thanks for sharing. Look how far you have come since moving to Maine. Hard work pays off. 😊

A quick note about being from away -- "A couple both descendants from many generations of Mainers took a quick trip to southern New England when she was very pregnant. On the way back she started having contractions and unfortunately she ended up having a baby boy born in the car on the Portsmouth, NH side of the Maine/New Hampshire bridge. He lived his whole life into his eighties in Maine but was always known as being from away" . Sorry couldn't help myself but to recycle this very old tale.

Maine does have a climate that many other states don't have, but we have not seem many tornadoes, or heat waves with temperatures above 110. Any way come on up and visit, move here and to live, or not. Enjoy your life where ever you call home.

Jason, invest is some gravel for your road. Since laying 6” of “3/4 inch minus” on our road we have yet to have a mud problem. It sets up like concrete. Every spring I run the land plane over it. For routine maintenance, after the land plane, I use a York rake. The gravel is not cheap but it is the only thing that holds up.. We get a 16 yard load every three years.. With 250 acres we have plenty of uses for it..

@BuckeyeNikki72 5 months ago

Purchased property on unmaintained road. It's something that I'm aware im going to have to make sure the road is drivable.

@greenkeeper448 5 months ago

Just cause the calendar says SPRING, in reality that was a poor guess.

Jason, I hope I don't get a lot of pushback for this question but ... Do you think it's possible to begin my Maine adventure by having a seasonal Homestead? As in May 1 - Oct 31??? Seems like enough time to order, grow, process and send to freezer. I may be trying to make it work when I need to be elsewhere Nov-Apr for the next 5 or 6 years but don't want to delay our start that long. You know the old saying that if a dream isn't nurtured, it withers up and dies on the vine. So starting with a six month homestead... Do you think it's realistically doable? And thanks in advance.
