Pecheneg raids brought many problems to the Kyivan princes and residents of Ancient Rus' in the 9th to early 11th centuries. These steppe nomads repeatedly besieged the walls of Kyiv, including sending their hordes there on behalf of the Byzantine emperors and in exchange for their rewards. The famous Serpent Ramparts near Kyiv, a beloved project of Prince Vladimir, were built precisely to contain the Pechenegs' rapid advance, which Russian infantry troops could not combat on equal terms. Only Prince Yaroslav the Wise was able to defeat the Pechenegs.

In this episode, we will discuss the origins and way of life of this Turkic people, the secrets of their military success, and the reasons for their defeat at the hands of more powerful nomadic hordes, which ultimately forced them to abandon the borders of Ancient Rus' forever.
