As a southerner, I have never seen anything this beautiful in my life.

As a woman who grew up with baked macaroni and cheese and who is also a lifelong Southerner, I approve. If you ask me, there’s no such thing as too much cheese. It is like some woman getting engaged saying this diamond is way too big.And if you come to the south, mac & cheese is listed as a vegetable. And I’m OK with that.

Also, try rubbing your baking dish with a cut clove of garlic. Also, the dried mustard is a must. And layering the cheese is also key. Also, again, I have a specific clear glass baking dish that I do buy it so I can see how a liquid levels are cooking.

My grandmother's recipe is so simple, and she was from Georgia.  First, she would boil the elbows until al dente. Before she placed noodles through a strainer, she would reserve 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the macaroni starch water. Then she would put fresh chopped sharp cheddar into a separate bowl. Then shred about 4 to 8 ounces of fresh mozzarella.  After that she would take the starch water in another bowl and combine 12 to 16 ounces of sour cream. Then add the starch water to the sour cream, and add 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard. Add half of the cheeses on to the sour cream mixture thoroughly. Add elbows, stir until well combined. Add the remaining  cheese on  top and place the dish into a 350° oven for 20 minutes adding salt and pepper to your own taste.  Remember there is a lot of sodium in the cheese, use discretion when seasoning.

Southern mac and cheese is definitely the best way to have it. We do it this way, but also loved adding breadcrumbs, and sometimes bacon to the top not just cheese. 🤤 Looks awesome. 🔥

They each have a purpose! The more  people  cook, the more  they customize recipes to their liking. Most people  have a preference because  they have tried  making many  things  and eventually  find out the best  recipes because  they were better. I will try  this!
