Everyone thinks that objects are sold at the Hôtel Drouot, but that's not true. People come here primarily seeking hope. Everyone hopes to experience the childlike joy of making a good deal, to be luckier or more intuition than their neighbor and leave with a more beautiful object. It's no coincidence, then, that it's been going on for 150 years, that the auction rooms are always packed. To understand the workings of this prestigious institution, we chose five auctioneers from among the 97 who work at Drouot—auctioneers who wield the gavel as skillfully as they do words. Drouot… a morning like any other… Amateur or professional buyers, strollers, the curious, regulars or just passing through, the ritual is unchanging: "Never before 11 a.m… And it's a mad rush because there are all the die-hards, myself included, looking for something. And then, we always hope for fabulous things! There's a dream here." A dream spread across three floors with 16 rooms where items ranging from €30 to €5 million are sold. What attracts these two regulars, with over 50 years of experience at Drouot, is "the pleasure of seeing people make mistakes. Seeing people pick up a 'banana' (a type of small fortune). Drouot is a game!"
