63 y/o American racer of 35 years, always clean. My guess is that every time I line up for a race, there is at least one doper. There is no testing anywhere. I keep racing, knowing that I am sometimes being bumped off the podium or denied a win by a doper. I don't measure myself by my results. I race because I love racing. The training, the process, the experience. I'm highly competitive and love winning when I can, but I wouldn't trade the whole spiritual buzz of competing clean for the hollow victory of a potentially better doped result. I feel sorry for the dopers because they don't understand themselves and will never get to experience what I do.

I’m never going to win a meaningful race, and that’s okay. But I’ve learned to love the process of training so that I can ride my bike in new and exciting places. I just finished L’Etape and I placed 8900th. While not an awesome result, I got to ride down Alpe D’Huez, Col du Croix, and the Galibier on closed roads. And while bombing down the other side of the Galibier, I thought to myself, “I’m so lucky that I’m healthy enough to ride in this amazing historic place.” I love cycling and the amazing places it’s taken me.

I need to dope to avoid getting dropped from my Cat 5 races smh...

Back in 2010 my buddy was nicked for roids & EPO and got a 2yr ban.

He raced for an American amateur team in the early 2000s. Of that team 6 out of 8 racers got nicked.

The chap who sorted out the PEDs also sorted Landis.

Google the Jock Wadley road race from 2010. 6 UK racers got nicked, but the press hardly did anything.

I'm more confident about the cleanliness of the pro peloton especially WT than I am about amateur weekend warriors. The number of those, especially at masters level, on things like TRT is pretty significant. Can't lump them all together imo.

This type of thing has gone on for years. In 2006 we were in Belgium at a kermesse. 170 started. As you come round the short lap they announce information over the speakers so the riders are made aware. After 30 minutes they announced doping control. Within 3 laps there was 25-30 riders left in the race.

Know what feels better than winning races? Finding out 11-39% of the people you beat were dopers, and you're clean.

How many riders 45+ aged riders are doping to dominante the Sunday group ride is the better question. 🤣

I like that Dylan got into the "software" side of it, because ultimately it is the real motivation behind doping and cheating.

Cheating is rampant in many other areas of life: A few years ago I was doing sim racing, mostly in iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizone. I put in a lot of grind and even had a lot of professional coaching I paid for, and I was a mid-pack driver IRL. In any public series/races, I got absolutely destroyed. Eventually I figured out many folks were cheating, when people started offering to sell me software to cheat in ACC. I was already kind of done with sports cars IRL and the sim for some other reasons, but that was the last straw. I can't imagine spending $300 real dollars to get a few second lap advantage to be able to actually compete with other cheaters in what is basically a video game and maybe podium or win a race, but that hedonic pleasure!

If I doped, and got a questionnaire asking if I doped, even if there was some sort of way to remain anonymous, I would still answer no. There is zero to gain from being truthful and if enough people answer yes, you can bet the testing authorities would start ramping up based on the data. So, if anything, I think the doping is still under reported in these surveys.
