Yeah, building the transitway with power lines on one side and the 403 on the other while separating Winston Churchill and Erin Mills from the rest via the Credit River basically kills most walking distance growth the (western) corridor can have.
I mean it was overbuilt to hell I think intentionally. Iirc they planned that one day it could be converted to LRT should it be necessary, all bridges and tunnels are built with height clearances allowing light rail vehicles to be retrofitted without needing major reconstruction. I can tell you though as someone who commutes to school on it daily the rush hours do see it being used. Though I have to admit it is rare to see people using any station (that I have seen) other than Square 1, Dixie, and Renforth. Plus the GO 19 and 40 are great express routes to the airport and to line 1. If nothing else it does serve as a decent express service. That said once the crosstown is extended to meet it at Renforth it will most likely be better used as a feeder.
the first time i took the miway express from toronto to missisauga, i was shocked at how clean and bright and comfortable it was... and that no one was there... there was no more than a handful of ppl across toronto and square one. and honestly miway is not bad, that means a lot coming from an asian. i feel like there is so much potential thats been left on the table.
While in Ontario, did you have a chance to check out the TTC bus network? It is very intensely run though on-time performance and transit priority could be improved. It also has an interesting fleet, with a lot of Orion VII (both old and new gen styling) and NovaBus LFS (only buying New Flyers recently), and only a few articulated buses relative to its massive fleet (none before 2013).
I've checked this a few times on Google Maps. If you're trying to go from Meadowvale to Kipling Station for Toronto, or vice versa, I usually get a different route. 6pm on a Thursday taking the GO and Miway from Kipling to Meadowvale is 1hr whereas the 109 using the corridor would take 1h21m. It would be 34 min by car. It's not realistic for it to be used for Toronto, at least from Meadowvale given the GO Train station.
Seems like they laid down the corridor just where they had space to do it. Maybe its large enough to be used for a future LRT expansion but given how dead it is, it doesn't really make sense. Between 2016 and 2021 census, Mississauga's population decreased slightly. I think it would make more sense to focus on improvements for newer developments. Making a full loop around Square 1 with all the condos there would probably help. The few times I've gone there its always congested.
What day and time was your trip? I wonder how it would have looked like at 8am or 5pm but I go by Rathburn station sometimes on weekdays around 6pm and its dead. Same for the few other random times I've gone by. Meadowvale Town Centre usually has quite a few people at the Miway terminal.
Building Transit for the sake of building is a very common theme in Suburban Ontario (why do you think YRT runs such pathetic Service despite its impressive infrastructure?)
