You can charge a portable power station back up battery that has a higher power rating for short-term use of high power appliances and to run your critical circuits overnight so you don't have to bother your neighbors with generator noise at night. Also, portable generators running at night are targets for theft during long power outages.

You also could have mentioned that propane doesn't go bad like gasoline does. If you only use the generator for a few hours per year, you might be better off with a propane generator.

When our neighborhood lost power, my Yamaha 2400 iSHC powered our refrigerator, chest freezer, TV, modem, some fans, AND both of our neighbors' refrigerators without skipping a beat. That was over a decade ago, though, and I would never pay the premium for Honda or Yamaha again. Champion, WEN, Westinghouse, and others make very good inverter generators that should give years of service IF they are properly used and maintained.

Worth getting a battery power pack with inverter you can charge when you have spare watts. It could allow a higher power draw depending on the inverter but would have to be sized accordingly.

I have a 1000w honda generator and its plenty big enough for us. It runs our fridge freezer, some lights and charges my x2 1000w Jackerys. Bigger in not always better, or quieter 😊

We just went through a power outage after a wind storm knocked down some power lines. I think I’m prepared for these. I used my goal Zero Yeti 500 to run my potable oxygen generator and another old goal zero 1250 to run our pellet stove (80watts). The next morning we started our Honda eu2000i to run fridge and regular ac oxygen generator. Had half of the power left on both portable battery stations in the morning. Small generator and power stations worked well. I still had a Pecron e1000lfp in reserve. We’re good for days by conserving energy.

We have a gen about that size and use it to recharge an Apex 300. Apex has split phase 240 and connects to the house with an interlock. We can power everything except the stove, oven, heat, AC and water heater. Everything else is about 1000-1200w, and the well pump pulls another 1000w. So the small gen will run everything we really need with the apex to buffer startup loads and convert to split phase.

We have a 3500 peak (3000 continuous) watt inverter and we can power 4 freezers, 2 refrigerators, one dehumidifier, desktop computer, and plenty of LED lights. Our generator came from Harbor Freight and did not cost much.
