In 1989 or 1990 I bought an 85 four valve XR200. It was a rolling frame and three 5 gallon buckets full of parts.  I wound up having to undertake a significant quest to find a new head. Apparently those heads because they're so little material between the valves often fail, but I did find one and it became one of if not the favorite dirt bike of my youth.

I always thought it strange to incorporate the rockers into a cam cover. Makes things more "fiddly".

Had a brand new XR200RD  1983 for almost a year zero problems then in 84 the XR200RE with RFVC  come out here in New Zealand was going trade in at local Honda shop but glad i did not as had couple friends that had then both were nightmares both cracked heads and had carb problems all fixed under warranty defiantly went better then the 2 valve RD i had

Absolute score. Looks in really good condition. I've had a few xr250 and xl250 with the rfvc heads. And each one had cracks between the exhaust valves and through the spark plug, or scarring on the camshaft middle journal. Maybe it was only a 250cc issue with the dual carb setups since my xr400 l, and 600 never had problems. Apparently almost each single head was the same for the 250s. A mechanic at a motorbike wrecker yard told me even if I bought a brand new OEM head for $5000 it would just end up doing the same lol. They all still ran fine and ever had any further issues. Just make sure to run really good synthetic oil to keep the temps down.

Good video, thks. But I never ever put anything on a taper shaft, as the grip is metal to metal, any lubricant will compromise the grip. The key is for positioning only. Otherwise very enjoyable video, keep up the good work!

Another cool bike. You prob already know this, but the carb manifold boot on these XR's become very brittle and can just crumble when you're removing or installing the carbs. Thankfully, there are rubber replacement boots available on ebay and they are actually great. I've installed one on an '86 XL250 I was fixing up.

Fingers crossed that it didnt jump and its the result of the p.o diving in .....

The flywheel is obviously from that bike, so no need for any lapping in. Just lay the bike over, to save the oil, whip cover and flywheel off, clean up shaft, refit and torque up.

Oh, oil filter ........ l soak in oil first ...... habit.

Great Video being a xr250r owner all this is interesting stuff. I noticed when you changed the oil filter it looked like where the oil feed pipe meets the frame it looks like it's kinked, which would really restrict oil flow? Or is it my 66yr old eyes playing tricks with me? Cheers
