In previous episodes, we have explored cases in which alleged serial killers were never identified, nor convicted of the horrific crimes they were believed to have committed. The same would prove true in the case of a modern-day murderer thought to have been responsible for the deaths of at least seven female victims in rural Japan. A killer whose disturbing and highly distinctive methods would ultimately earn him the chilling nickname, ‘The Wednesday Strangler’.

Having a statute of limitations on murder is crazy

"It’s heartbreaking to see these cases go cold due to legal technicalities and evidence issues. Time might erode the physical trail, but it never heals the trauma for these families. I truly hope that modern advancements in forensic science will one day bring closure to these victims and finally shine a light on this dark chapter."

We have a similar case here in Ireland called "The Irish Triangle" where five women just disappeared in the 1980's and 1990's.There have been suspects but nobody formally charged.

Well, it sure as hell wasn’t me.. I only strangle on Thursday afternoons between 4:15pm and 6:18pm as my dog directs me.

Scared straight by nearly being caught? Not how serial killers work. More often than not it will have the opposite impact. The thrill is heightened as they got away with it despite looking their hunters right in the eyes. So they would actually escalate the pattern. So the more likely explanation is they are incapable of continuing. By death, incarceration, or moving to another area.

This is far more scarier than ghost or monsters.

Thank you Bedtime Stories, those poor victims.

In Japan, if it's a shrine it's Shinto, if it's a temple, it's Buddhist. They're not interchangeable.

In the accused's defense, Japanese prosecutors tend to run roughshod over suspects. They get away with things that would be illegal in the West.

May they rest in peace.

Whenever I see a cold case from Japan, my first guess as to why it's still unsolved is police incompetence. Their extreme face saving culture mixed with the torturous methods used to extract confessions creates shitshow investigations.

@BigBadRedMantis 2 months ago

how the hell could they do statue limitations for murder? it makes no sense.

As someone who speaks and reads Japanese, your hiragana and kanji are very good in the illustrations! I can tell that the illustrator doesn't know Japanese because some characters are a little awkward in a way that a foreigner who doesn't know stroke order would produce, rather than someone who knows Japanese but has written hastily. However, I think this is a good thing because it shows that your channel actually did your best to recreate a language that you don't know, rather than turning to AI or something as other channels have (Hank Green was just outed for using AI, and it's been a HUGE disappointment!). Additionally, the characters are very neat and, even though a few strokes are slightly odd on first glance, entirely legible to readers. It's really hard to mimic an unfamiliar alphabet, especially one like kanji that takes native speakers a decade to learn, so huge props for the effort and beautiful result!

Would love more Japan episodes… Curse of the Colonel, the Blue Blanket Butcher, Aka Manto, Hanako-san, Slit-mouthed woman, so many yokai… there’s a lot of material

When it comes to murder cases, crimes and disappearances Japan has to be the country with the weirdest ones. The guy who murdered his whole village in one night in the 1930s, the son of a Celebrity who killed and ate his French roommate, The bizarre stalking phenomena that's too prevalent and nearly impossible to get rid of in their society. Then you got the disappearances that border on the paranormal side. I think the Japanese even coined the term 'Spirited Away' to refer to people who go missing in unexplained circumstances and are never found.

Typical police error—they try to pin it on someone they think is guilty and overlook everything else as a result.

The man was a local and most likely new a few of the victims personally.

What is quite chilling to me is that there are literally hundreds of serial killers still walking the streets. They could be your grocer, gardener, hairdresser or even be your neighbour.
They just haven't been caught 😳
