Why Queen Mary Refused to Forgive Edward VIII for the Rest of Her Life
On the evening of 10 December 1936, Edward VIII signed the Instrument of Abdication. On 11 December, he broadcast his farewell speech to the British people. And on 12 December, he sailed for France, and for the twice-divorced American woman his mother refused to acknowledge.
Queen Mary was 69 years old that winter. She lived another 16 years, until March 1953, 10 weeks before her granddaughter Elizabeth II was crowned. And across those years, according to every biographer who has worked from the Royal Archives, she never once forgave her eldest son for what he had done.
She refused to receive Wallis Simpson at any royal residence. She refused to attend Edward's wedding at the Château de Candé in June 1937. She wrote in her own diaries about the woman she believed had unfitted her son for the throne. And when Edward returned to Britain after the war to visit his aging mother, he came alone, every time, on her terms.
James Pope-Hennessy, her authorized biographer, wrote in 1959 that Queen Mary's refusal was never really about Wallis Simpson. It was about the abdication itself, the act she considered a betrayal not of her personally, but of the monarchy she had spent her entire adult life building.
This documentary traces that refusal from the abdication in December 1936 to her death in March 1953. Every meeting she declined. Every event she left the room to avoid.
