Oh my goodness!  I have watched dozens of videos and read blogs, trying to figure out best brushes for watercolor.  You have hit the nail squarely on its head with your unique perpective of using both faux squirrel and sable.   I was focused on best brands, useful shapes, and range of sizes, trying to narrow everything down to optimum.  Your approach alleviated my stress and gave me permission not to have to choose.  Thank you!

Thank you for this very thorough explanation. I’ve wondered about the characteristics of the squirrel and sable types in relation to each other. Your brand recommendations were also very helpful as they all look so similar hanging by their myriads in the store/ online. It’s exactly what I needed to make a more informed and cost effective decision when I make my next brush purchase.

    What do you know about triangle brushes?

I was sewing with a friend yesterday and couldn’t find my magnifying glasses. I reached for another pair and put them on… my friend laughed as the other pair were already on my head… yep. I get it. I don’t buy brushes over about 30 dollars as a rule, except for my princeton quill. Escoda Versatil is my current fave.

This was very helpful. I wonder if you have compared synthetic sable and synthetic squirrel in travel brushes? If you have, please post a video!

excellent video. Perfect for my situation... I had my first watercolor lesson Saturday and I wanted to get supplies for the lesson. I did go for the Daniel Smith paints and I did get good paper. However i had searched for hours online to get myself educated as to which brushes to buy. I had come to the conclusion that a sable synthetic ( a mix or all faux)
I was aware that Squirrel held more water but is known to get floppy.. I did read some excellent articles about the #6 Princeton Neptune Quill, so I bought one. For my round brushes I was set on the synthetic sables.  I was looking at travel brushes and had it narrowed down to the Princeton Aqua Elite travel brushes or the Escoda Versatil travel brushes. I had known about the Silver Black Velvet voyage brushes and they appear to raved about. Now I am confused.
I am hoping to get new brushes for this coming Saturday's lesson. The Instructor used my #6 Quill to show me how to use the point and had made some nice fine lines with it. The quill seems to hold a point.
I hope you can add some input to help with my decision. ...Princeton Aqua Elite travel brushes or The Escoda Versatil Travel brushes or the Silver Black Velvet Brushes... or something else?  Thank you.....You can see I am looking at Squirrel and Sable....would like select Squirrel or Sable....I do have the Princeton Neptune #6 Quill ( Squirrel)
