Coopers make barrels and other round wooden boxes. They were ubiquitous throughout history until the 20th century. Local cooper John Cox gives an informative and entertaining look at barrels, the people who made them, and how they contributed to our history. #@dandhtv

WOW!!!!! What an amazing History & Tutorial on Barrel Making. I was asked to make a barrel and being a retired machinist, I knew the staves taper at the ends. I didn't know how to decide how much to taper the staves. I knew how to divide a circle into sections, but the simple knowledge to divide by 2 gives the angle for each side of the staves. I'm not trying to make a wet barrel, just something that looks like that type of barrel. This video has been a great help to me. Even still; it's not an easy thing to make. The barrel bands must be cone shaped; it's not just a straight strip of metal, and that's another challenge in it self.

Wow! You are so entertaining . This is one of my favorite videos. I'm 72, live in KY, and I'm learning how to build barrels. Thanks for sharing.

While traveling back to my base around lager lechfeld in Germany, had lunch in a wine barrel turned into a cafe on Rhine river.

There is a non-profit organization outside of Kalamazoo, MI that teaches many early trades. Tillers International offers classes in coopering ( you make a pin, which is 4 1/5 gallons, using traditional hand tools), blacksmithing, timber framing, plowing a field with oxen and many more. The coopering class is 5 days long and is well worth the price of admission, including travel expenses.

Will you write a book on barrel making? Thanks for identifying a Sun plane. I was given one but had no idea what it was called. I will watch this often there is so much information.

Plenty of good stories in this video, although the Egyptians used barrels 3000 years ago, research the word COUP to hold or keep, BUT a huge usage was for gunpowder. DRY + WET + WHITE coopers were the trades when I was young.

In 1995 I made barrels. Made all my own tools to shape them. Leaked like sieves. But they looked great! It's literally an art form to build them properly. Sigh. 😂
