Martin O Neill gets all the plaudits but I had totally forgotten it was Barnes who brought in Petrov and Petta. Two players that would be huge for Celtic long after Barnes was gone.
Imagine how much Moravcik would be worth these days, he was a genius and it's crazy he was 33 before signing for us, Him and Eyal Berkovic were classy.
Stephane Bonnes, or Steven Bones if you prefer, was seeing a rather attractive young lady who lived round the corner from me when I was growing up. We chapped the door regularly to ask if Stephane would like to come out and play. He was playing for Partick Thistle at this time. I remember him asking me for money when I informed him that I sold him for several hundred thousand pounds in CM01/02. Another time he sadly informed us that he was going back to France.
".......we lost in the right way, apart from the 2 bad goals we gave away, particularly the 2nd one with the basic error......" Dear oh dear. That quote says all you need to know about John's managerial prowess 😂
Call me ignorant of Scottish football , but I did laugh at the " next up was a tough test against the stalwart defence of ..... KILMARNOCK...."..😂..and I admit it is quite funny watching the John Barnes interviews in a row getting more n more stressed bless him man.
John Barney’s won manager of the a month and on the next month lost his job overall he did well for a young manager Nice man who was a world class player
Incredible how things changed after that season and Martin O’Neill came in. Winning a treble in his first season against a good rangers side it set Celtic on track for a quarter century of domestic dominance. So much so that rangers literally died trying to keep pace and it’s been pretty much one way traffic since 2012 although right now there seems to be issues at both clubs again.
A disastrous yet fascinating season in that Barnes's failure perfectly set up the MON era and our domination ever since. Had Barnes finished a close 2nd to Rangers and beaten ICT, he would've been given another season, and MON would've gone elsewhere.
