Damn, I needed to see this video. I have wanted to move to Tassie since I bought land on the west coast in 2010. Stress has finally caused my career in QLD to come to an end and I think this is the push I needed.
I left Tassie as a teen and lived in many places on the mainland. Twenty years ago, I moved back to Tassie, and intend to stay here until I cark it! That seems to be a common theme. We leave, but something always brings us back. I love It here.
Ive fallen in love with Tassie. So much so that I decided to purchase in Ulverstone. You took the words out of my mouth. The way I describe it is Australia back in the 80's - simply a different time.
Thinking of trialling it for a year. Im in my 40s, but already feel this is my calling after living in the thick of Sydney hustle bustle (and I mean main roads and intersections in Sydney East) for my ENTIRE life, Im so excited to try out the quieter scene. Even if it means its only for a short time.
***EDIT We should start a group for those wanting to moving over from the mainland! š
Came down from SA for a 10 day holiday.....within 3mths I'd moved here permanently. Been here 7yrs now, nth/w tassie is the best, absolutely love the easy going lifestyle, friendly locals and the fabulous scenery everywhere you go!
I've lived from the Top End to Tassie and a lot of places inbetween. I moved to Tassie similar timing to you and totally agree its like going back to my childhood and teens where life was less complicated and we trusted our neighbours. It's one of the many reasons I moved here. I started coming to Tassie at 17 and moved here at the same time of year exactly 40 years later. The weather is awesome for a knitter! I also rate it 9.5 out of 10. the missing half a point is not isolation because it was much more isolating living in ArnhemLand couldn't drive out except in the dry season roughly july August when the rivers had dropped after the wet season and you needed to be able to 4WD through many which still have water and crocs. planes were small and enjoyed a rough ride dropping, suddenly and mostly getting back up to altitude but not always. storms/cyclones are brutal. WA is more isolated it takes longer to drive to the eastern states and more expensive to fly. For me the missing half a point is only that after 3 years my daughter moved back to the mainland for work and her friends which at 21 is a fair call. She still loves it down here just at her age most want to be around their mates.
It's not only Tasmanian locals, people are the same where I grew up and similar across the country. Every town and/or state I've lived has their version of who is a "local" or not. In Darwin you can't class yourself as a Territorian unless you were born there or survived Cyclone Tracey otherwise everyone else is from "Down South". in WA you're either from "here" or "over there" In Broken Hill there are 3 classes A, B and C. A Class is anyone born and who continues to live there or at least didn't move away for long periods. B class is married to an A class or born but left for a long time and has returned. C Class is everyone else. Tassie either you're an islander or local born and bred or you're a "mainlander". The truth is that people from every state migrate and I hope that our loved ones who do are treated like an Aussie anywhere they go in Australia. We should all respect wherever we are and take care of where we live and the people around us. We are one. That makes us a local wherever we find ourselves.
Hi Jonesy, I enjoyed ur video about ur move to Tassie, I'm in QLD- u mostly talk up the positives. I've good health but I'd really like ur take on the Health services there as I'm seeing a lot of negative comments which makes me think twice about moving.
Jonesy mate..... Tassie is exactly like the South Island of NZ, simple living if you want and a major town/city is only 60 mile from each other, yeah more expensive with petrol or diesel but you can still find a place to grow your own vege on a 1/4 or 1/2 acre whicew means youy can have a couple of freezer ready lawn mowers keeping the place tidy, and when you say G'day on the street people say it back......yep sounds like I would like to live in Tassie my kind of place
We want to move to Tas within the next 12 months from the Gold Coast the moving costs seem horrendous. Looks like the kids my be getting the pick of the furniture š
