I did Hapkido when I was younger. Not staying with it is one of my greatest regrets.

Back in 84-85 when I was stationed in Korea I studied Hapkido. My one big regret is that I didn't keep up with it when I got back stateside. To me it was great exercise and good discipline. I actually made it to 1st degree blue belt.

I been studying hapkido for 47 years now

All Hapkido schools are not the same. I studied Hapkido for a year in Chicago back in the late 70s at Hyun's Hapkido School and earned a yellow belt and it was the real deal! You didn't "buy" belts every few months like so many other schools and you really learned true self-defense. I moved to SoCal in the early 80s and attended a couple of schools there, along with a jiu-jitsu school and was shocked on how watered down their techniques were and how disappointed that many of the students weren't serious about their training, got fed up and quit.

He was not from ChungCheung BukDo, but from Cholla BukDo.   He was found by Suh, Bok Seup, son of  an assemblyman and owner of rice wine brewery, who witnessed the physical altercation between Choi, Yong Sul and a gang of hooligans.  Suh was the one who got Choi into teaching DaeDong Ryu HapkiYuSool which evolved later into Hapkido.  However, he taught DaeDong Hapki Yusool in its authenticity to a few who have kept it in its tradition, like Lim, Jong Bae/Park, Sang Joon and Kim, Yoon Sang.

Both my TKD masters were also Hapkido masters as well so we were taught both.  I dreaded being called forward so the masters to demonstrate a Hapkido technique because I knew that it would be painful.

I was born in 1965. In 1975 I start to train in Hapki-yu-sul known now present day as Hapkido. At  10 to 39 years of age I earn black belt 6 dan in Hapki-yu-sul. I have certificates from Myung Young Kim ,Han Jae’s top Korean student as well as Ronald Christopher Garland his Top American student and sunsanim Ji Han Jae . I’ve spent 35 years + in Hapkido.i was taught this history by all these great men . It’s nice to see this well put together video

Takeda is the Grandmaster that taught OSensei Daito RYU AIKIJUIJITSU his family art the parent art of Aikido. Ueshiba studied for years under Takeda

Sensei. The difference between Daito RYU AIKIJUIJITSU and Aikido is Daito RYU is primarily death oriented. Smaller circles so grabbing an attacker by the upper arm you literally can tear it from the roots. Ueshiba used larger flowing softer circles in his redirection allowing an attacker to fall farther away and causing him to be stunned not broken or torn. AIKIJUIJITSU IS old around 900 AD the Takeda family began dissecting the bodies of samurai killed on a battlefield to find out how to joints work how the tendons and joints can be manipulated to cause the most pain to break them to tear the tendons from the bone and in dissecting these bodies It was actually studying the inside of the human body they developed and incorporated phone manipulation tendon and ligament manipulation and their techniques came from this so like if you bend your finger back it hurts really bad because it's not meant to be bent back these guys figured out how everything in your body isn't supposed to go the direction it's not supposed to go and that's basically what they do when they grab you They turn your tendons into incredible pain centers It's amazing how these people developed scientifically these incredible arts

Interesting, they used my teachers picture. He is an old-school Korean master. He mellowed out in his older years but when I initially started training under him, training was brutal.

Now I will say this as I’ve been studying this art almost 50 years. There’s nothing about my art origin that is provable 100%, when it comes to its origin and beginnings. So take this with a grain of salt. It’s a great story. But nobody knows if it’s 100% factual.

As an old-school HKD stylist myself it’s sad to say that finding a good school in this art like the mini martial arts nowadays can be difficult. So many things water down, so many people who don’t truly understand the art. The problem with HKD nowadays is that you have a lot of taekwondo schools who claim to teach Hapkido, but all they actually teach are Some Hapkido based and influenced techniques.😊
