I’ve been building for over 12 years now. Robert O’Brien is the best teacher on the Internet even the old videos explain so much.! thank you so much, Robert
Tried it and worked to perfection. Was a little hesitant at first because I wasn't sure if it would really work without damaging the finish on my newly-purchased Larrivee P-03R, but it did. Used Ronsonol lighter fluid and dental floss to help lift up the pick guard. Took me about 20 minutes as I was being very careful with the whole process. Thanks for the great tip.
This is a very helpful video & your method works beautifully. I got a new Epi EJ-200 jumbo today & love everything about it except the cheap pickguard. I wasn't keen on the hairdryer method because of the possibility of damage & then I saw your video. I applied Zippo lighter fluid liberally to a cotton ball & wiped it around the PG several times.Within 3 minutes I could get a finger nail under the PG & gently lift it off. No finish damage or discoloration to the sunburst finish. Thanks Robert!
@OBrienGuitars hi, I didn't find charcoal lighter fluid, so I bought white petrol and it worked great!! and the guitar is pretty new so there's no shadow under the pickguard. thank you for your help!
Good question. I would not put on a transparent pickguard for that reason in this case. UV light darkens the wood over time but I would imagine it would take quite a while to get even close to making it look like the rest of the top where there was no pickguard
@OBrienGuitars well it's just that I don't want to damage the quality of the guitar. The sound quality if ever. I'm just making sure cause I don't know what I'm doing haha but I'll try. Thanks!
PS...With a new guitar I think it will be easier to lift the pickguard because the glue hasn't had a chance to age & harden over the years. Also, I doubt if there will be any difference in guitar color because of light damage in a NEW guitar. Thanks again Robert!
@Crinol4 Unfortunately you will need to refinish the guitar to get rid of this. The ultrviolet light exposure has darkened everything except where the pickguard was.
Great tip. Would naptha/lighter fluid work on a guitar finished with nitrocellulose finish, on my Eastman? I want to avoid dissolving the finish if possible. Thank you. Great channel by the way.
