At a five-day humanoid robot athletics competition held in China, Japanese and Chinese companies clashed in a fierce battle for the world's fastest time.
■Superhuman Athletic Ability
The robots competed fiercely in Beijing, China.
In track and field events, records surpassing those of humans were set one after another.
However, there were also many unusual incidents, such as robots falling over just before the start or bursting into flames after collisions.
Despite these mishaps, the robots are beginning to demonstrate athletic abilities that surpass those of humans.
On the second day of the competition, the 400-meter race was held. Some robots displayed running performances that defied expectations.
According to an American research company, 97% of humanoid robots shipped in the first half of this year were manufactured by Chinese companies.
■The Only Japanese Participant
Amidst the fierce competition from Chinese companies, the only Japanese participant was the GMO Internet Group. Their robot's nickname is "Hitomin." We covered their final preparations for the competition in mid-May. When I ran alongside the robot on the track, I could barely keep up.
The robot itself is made by the Chinese company Unitree. GMO developed the software to control its movement, and it will compete in the competition as Japan's representative.
The robot seemed tireless, but it stopped moving and fell over.

Takizawa Shota
"The motor was getting too hot midway through, so we slowed it down, and the fact that it fell over at the end was also due to the heat."
■What were the results of the qualifying round?
After implementing the heat countermeasures that had been a problem, the 400-meter qualifying round began. The robot lined up at the starting line alongside its unique rivals.

"For humans, this is a moment of tension; do robots experience such emotions?"
"The start signal sounded. The speed isn't fast, but the robot 'Hitomin' is running. It's running steadily while maintaining its balance."
Maintaining its lane, "Hitomin" steadily moved forward.
"Hitomin has crossed the finish line! Loud applause erupts from the crowd. She collapses, exhausted."
Despite suffering a head injury, she impressively advanced to the next round in 10th place.
Afterward, she participated in the semi-finals after repairs, but fell and was unable to complete the race.
In the 1500-meter race, she completed the second heat of the final, finishing in 3rd place. (※Rankings are preliminary results).
Takizawa-san:
"For example, managing heat while running long distances, running fast, are essential technologies that will be needed in various fields, so I want to contribute to making future social implementations better."
