In our last DCS World test, we looked at the super-long-range AIM-424 Malice missile. This time, we're going in the opposite direction: small air-to-air missiles designed to destroy drones and cruise missiles in large numbers.

Modern air combat is increasingly focused on threats such as one-way attack drones, drone swarms and subsonic cruise missiles. Instead of using expensive long-range missiles against relatively slow targets, could fighter aircraft use compact, low-cost missiles such as Lockheed Martin's CUDA, MBDA's CAMM, Raytheon's Peregrine and the AIM-9XCV?

To find out, we set up a massive drone swarm interception scenario in DCS.

90 one-way attack drones have been launched from Iran toward a neighbouring country. We test two different fighter formations to see which can defeat the swarm more effectively and economically.

First, we deploy four F-35s, each carrying 20 mini-missiles — giving the formation a total of 80 Peregrines.

Then we deploy 13 F-16s, each armed with a combination of AIM-120 AMRAAMs and AIM-9 Sidewinders, for another total of 80 air-to-air missiles.

So which approach works better?

Four F-35s with 80 Peregrines, or 13 F-16s with 80 AMRAAMs and Sidewinders?

Can small, inexpensive air-to-air missiles provide the answer to drone swarm defence? And, most importantly, which solution delivers the best cost-effectiveness against mass drone attacks?

Let's find out in DCS World.

Can you fly by closely and splash the drones with your turbulence?

@VoltaireVoltaire-zq4zh 4 weeks ago

For "slow" drones (with propellers), the current solution adopted by both US and Europe is guided rockets; these have roughly a 6-8 km range (safe enough to limit the chance of debris hitting the plane), a good precision and cost about 20-50 times less than an average missile (often less than 10,000$).

The humble stinger with aim-9x seeker sitting in the corner canceled and forgotten.

"Smackey, smackey, boom boomed". 😂😂. Love how you describe things

I suspect that small missiles might be pushed toward the form factor of the SDB, so that they can be mounted on the same quad racks.

We're going Robotech now huh?

EXCELLENT.

It would have been interesting to see a battle where both sides are F35's but one side uses the longer range AIM-120 AMRAAMs and the other side uses the Peregrines. Would be interesting to see weather range or quantity is the stronger loadout for air to air engagements.

Dear valued reapers, thanks Cap. I'll check it out as soon as I get home from work!

Just have a prop plane with a bunch of storage space and a guy chucking out those interceptor quadcopters

Idk. I just feel like there could have been more explosions back to back.😂

Great fun as always!

Great video Cap loved all the kills

Nowadays US prefer to choose guided rockets for splash drones. Each AMRAAM cost over 1 million dollars, which is never affordable for cheap targets.

Now, please do it with A-10s

@jcadlols 4 weeks ago

Can't help but think A-10s could be configured to be a really good anti drone platform. I take it they don't have an air to air mode with the gun. Imagine a fused air burst round for the 30mm. Down firing gun and better speed matching, along with all the wing hard points would make it pretty effective.

The dance of the vampire was won and lost. Both sides knew which was which.

Could do Peregrine on F-16s vs APKWS II next if resources allow.

I’m suprised that modders were able to add this so quickly, better yet you making videos with it! Thank you for informing of these new missiles in the last video and keep up the good work!
