One of our upcoming books will address the history of the roads in Santa Catarina and their evolution over time. We seek to understand how the regions connected and how family migrations transformed the economy, society, and course of the state.
Santa Catarina brings together diverse cultures that ended up interconnected by routes that were practically nonexistent at the beginning of the 18th century.
A bit of the history of the pioneering Camargo family, in the Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul mountain ranges.
At the end of August 2026, we were in the mountain town of Lages to understand the connections established between the Itajaí Valley and the Santa Catarina mountain range at the end of the 19th century. This approach stemmed from the initiative of leaders from the Blumenau Colony, who structured a regional project aimed at creating a network of roads to connect the regions — until then almost exclusively dependent on maritime routes and the Caminho das Tropas (Troop Trail), a historical route that connected Rio Grande do Sul to the provinces of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and at this moment we are organizing the story of a former drover.
