Before you rely on any overnight spot, make sure the rig itself isn't the problem β€” this is the inspection guide I use before I hand over a dollar:

Walmart overnight RV parking is disappearing, and the numbers are worse than most RVers think. More than 1,000 locations are now documented as no-park out of roughly 4,600 US stores. Commonly cited estimates put stores permitting overnight stays at around 78% in 2010, roughly 58% by 2020, and about 40% of locations restricted today. Walmart has never published a national policy β€” the corporate line is that it permits RV parking on store lots "as it is able," and everything else is delegated to the manager on duty.

🚐 In this video I break down where it's still working and where it's gone. The states still broadly friendly: Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, the Dakotas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wyoming. The states where it's mostly gone: California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. The pattern tracks land value, not hospitality β€” and it closes exactly the corridors most RVers drive.

🚐 Why the doors closed, and only one reason is about RVer behavior: municipal ordinances that override store permission (including a documented $48 fine in Savannah, Georgia), shopping-center leases the store doesn't control, real abuse including wastewater dumping that ends a location permanently, and the biggest one β€” Walmart remodeling 650+ stores in 2026 and building an EV fast-charging network across nearly 20 states, both of which consume the exact perimeter asphalt RVers were told to use.

🚐 How to read a lot before you shut the engine off: perimeter signage instead of the entrance, landscaping as policy, the empty-truck-row test, spotting a recent remodel, and the 30-day data rule for apps.

🚐 What's actually left, in three tiers. Free courtesy: Cracker Barrel's roughly 650 locations, Cabela's and Bass Pro, Camping World's 189 stores across 42 states, Sam's Club, Home Depot, and 24-hour gyms. Paid and predictable: Love's roughly 600 locations with hookup sites from $32 to $47 and RV Stops from $45 to $55, Pilot and Flying J, plus casinos from free to $10 with 3 to 5 nights at tribal properties and up to 28 in Nevada. And membership networks: Harvest Hosts at 9,700+ locations, $99 Classic, $169 with Boondockers Welcome, $179 All Access.

🚐 Plus the exact sentence to say at the service desk, and the two questions that guarantee you'll be told no.
