Yesterday, a new album launch was held at the showroom of Shin-Hon Audio, the audio distributor in Wan Chai. This album is a double-disc set titled "Leslie Cheung Eternal," and the vinyl record is managed by Mr. Lau Chun-Tak, known as "Hi Fi Tak," and his team. Therefore, we specially invited Mr. Tak to explain the production process of this precious vinyl record.
Mr. Tak mentioned that the recordings from the Capital Artists era were not bad in themselves, but there might have been some minor errors during the production process. In addition, the master tapes themselves were quite old, having passed through different hands, and the company personnel had changed frequently, so the new colleagues who took over might not have fully understood the process. Therefore, the final result might not have met the high standards of audiophiles. This time, the record company wanted to produce a high-quality reissue vinyl, so they spared no expense. Besides having Mr. Tak re-organize the DSD files converted from the original analog master tapes, they corrected the previously problematic parts, then sent it to the United States for mastering, where master recording engineer Bernie Grundman personally oversaw the mastering of the vinyl discs, before sending it to Germany for printing. What was the final result?
Of course, yesterday's album launch also included a listening session. Several different songs, both fast and slow, were auditioned, and all received high marks. Moreover, the album didn't deliberately create a strong sound effect; it retained the original charm while also reproducing many essential details, such as the guitar's pull-offs, the impact of the drums, the layering of the accompaniment, and the clarity and imaging of the vocals. It was truly moving, and the media present applauded in agreement multiple times!
To be honest, before attending yesterday's press conference, when I learned the price of this vinyl record (HKD 1899), I also thought it was extremely expensive. However, after listening to the demo tracks today, and with Brother Tak's detailed explanation, I still think it's very pricey, but definitely worth it. Firstly, Brother Tak received the master tapes last October and spent countless hours carefully listening to and correcting issues, which is why it took almost a year for the official release. Secondly, a significant amount of money was spent on re-plate and burning in the US, then printing in Germany, before it was finally completed. This meticulous production alone justifies the price.
Returning to the music itself, every track is one of Leslie Cheung's classic hits, absolutely timeless. The fact that it's of such high quality is truly remarkable; I never even dreamed of such a high-quality release. So, I can only say: "You might have paid a premium, but you didn't make a mistake!" I voted with my money, buying a set to enjoy at home!
Finally, the demo track you heard wasn't a blank copy; it was the regular retail version!
Happy birthday to my brother! We'll always remember him!
