The Gaoshun appreciation is off the charts and I’m so here for it

No one talks like Gaoshun, Billy
No one walks like Gaoshun, Billy
No one disrespects Gaoshun, Billy

Boom's man-crush on Gaoshun is hilarious and understandable

Man this show is so slept on. Glad to see likeminded folks in here. This show is just great.

17:39 they held their arm while writing to keep their sleeves from rubbing against the still wet ink.

Not me sitting here giggling waiting for that slap I knew was coming.

28:46 I remember watching this episode at anime club last year and when Maomao slapped the lady in waiting we all just went “DAMN” so loud people probably heard us across the hall

Point of clarification for those who missed it: The current Emperor's Father was an evil p-word. He took the young concubine into the palace when she was literally a baby, 10 years after his second son (the baby Jinshi, who was actually the current Emperor's son, was switched with) was born. The current Emperor brought his young step-mother back into the palace as a "consort" at the request of his mother, the current Empress Dowager, (one of the previous Emperor's prior victims,) to protect her from the outside world.

The ignorance and injustices that were normal in these times are something I take comfort in, seeing that we HAVE won major ground in making people smarter and society more decent. Mind you, these days we are seeing ground being lost with alarming regularity and frequency.

25:16 based on the light novel, the emperor is actually realy smart and observant. I think he is aware that the princess doesn't really want to union so he didn't force her.

HOW DARE YOUTUBE HIDE THIS FROM ME FOR 20 MINUTES

Maomao uses the power of autism to solve mysteries and get into the hearts of the entire Rear Palace. I love this show!!!

its so good when a series doesnt have to keep 1 upping itself with every arc and still be interesting

Lishu thankfully never slept with the previous emporer because his son (the current emperor) and his consort Ah-duo protected her from him.
When the previous emperor died and Lishu was sent to a convent the current emperor brought her back as his own consort so her father couldn't sell her off to another old man.

Also, not so fun fact: the reason the previous emperor favored young girls was because his mother was so cruel and controlling that he developed a fear of older women but he still needed to create heirs. The current emperor's mother gave birth when she was 10 YEARS OLD!!!! 🤬

I love that Boom calls out all the weirdos in chat hating on the female characters for no reason, he’s a real one

In Regards to Episode 6, we call that Grooming today, back then that was a business transaction. Sadly some women were purchased even before they were born to be raised for the purpose of marrying a high ranking noble to bare his kids. So for that girl to be married off at 9 is just insane and downright creepy as hell.

Here are all the thoughts i had while watching this season:

Episode 3: Cool detail, the battle the military officer won a reward for valor for is the battle vs barbarians talked about in episode 2 and he is the officer who stopped the villagers from being executed. And Gyokuyou isn't envious because Fuyou gets to go free. She's envious because Gyokuyou has to share her love of the Emperor with other women whereas now Fuyou gets her love all to herself.

Episode 4: I love the way Maomao is so fluidly animated in this episode. Checking the food for the Emperor, waving goodbye to Xiaolian, etc...

Episode 5: Remember that aphrodisiac Jinshi stole from Maomao in episode two? Well, he was the one who gave it to the court lady who then gave it to the “woman-hating” (gay) officer.

Episode 9: Here’s something to think about: why is the eunuch in charge of the Rear Palace looking over bills and laws? He should have nothing to do with politics.

Episode 19: The Light Novel author confirmed the guard got a promotion for attacking Maomao. To him, Maomao is just a random serving girl who just accused him of a murder conspiracy. Jinshi is (supposedly) the emperor’s younger brother and next in line for the throne and is seen in public intimately carrying a commoner, a serving girl. That's a big fucking deal!

Episode 20: I love how this show distinguishes between coincidence, conjecture, conspiracy, and certainty. It feels like a lot of mystery shows (like crime procedurals) completely forego that nuance and often have the detective lives by a “no such thing as a coincidence” or “go by my gut” rule. I get there is a time constraint when it comes to episodic mysteries and serial mystery series that is clearly building up to something like this but still.

Episode 23: I love how this backstory completely recontextualizes everything Lakan ever did. He is no longer a creep, just someone looking after their daughter as best they can. And he portrays himself as an assaulter because he blames himself. Still a weirdo though.

Episode 24: Lakan's reunion with Fengxian makes me cry. And I'm not a crier. I'm so glad they got a little bit of happiness, however bittersweet it is, with Fengxian being terminal.

17:41  dunno if you already know at this point but the "holding their hand while they write calligraphy" is not for stability. their holding back the clothing cloth to make sure it doesn't smudge the ink. if i'm correct ink is more expensive than the already expensive paper at this point in time. wasting both ink and paper would be very bad.

Billys, get yourself a girl who looks at you the way Maomao looks at venomous caterpillars.

Love this series. Her constant rejection of Jinshi cracks me up every time
