🎙️ DELAY. DENY. DEFEND.
This is the model that much of the American healthcare system is built around: not the patient, but profit.
Delay. Delay authorization for tests or treatments.
Deny. Deny patients’ claims for coverage or reimbursement.
Defend. Defend those decisions in court until the very end, even against patients who are in debt, critically ill, or dying.
Yes, because in the United States, having health insurance does not automatically mean having access to healthcare. Every appointment, every test, every procedure has to be approved, assessed by an algorithm or an internal reviewer, and can be denied for a wide range of reasons: financial, bureaucratic, or simply strategic.
For patients, every day is a race against time. But for insurance companies, every day of delay… means more profit.
In the United States, this has always been an extremely sensitive issue. Presidents, activists, and entire communities have fought for decades in an attempt to reform a system that puts profit before human life. But no proposed law, protest, or reform has ever truly managed to change things.
But on December 4, 2024, something happens… something that will force not only the entire country, but the entire world, to look in that direction.
At around 6 a.m., in the heart of Manhattan, New York City, a man is shot dead in cold blood from behind.
But this is no random victim…
That man is Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States.
Next to his body, on the sidewalk, investigators find shell casings connected to the three shots fired. Inscribed on them are three words: delay, deny… depose.
Today, I’m going to tell you about the person accused of this crime and what has become one of the most divisive, widely discussed, and controversial cases in recent years: the case of Luigi Mangione.
