In this video we explore the many uses of electrolysis unlocked by inexpensive ion exchange membrane technology.

Check out Robert's channel here to thank him for his generous sharing of knowledge, and to learn more about membrane electrolysis/electromining: @rowow

In this video we learn about all the incredible electrochemistry that is unlocked by ion exchange membranes made from simple hardware store components. This project was made possible thanks to Robert from https://www.youtube.com/@Rowow who published a very inexpensive and practical method to make these membranes.

Thanks everyone for being here and sticking with me through the past 5ish months since my last video. I made a community post a while back about some long-term health issues which have knocked me out for a few months every year for the past 7-8yrs. I think those issues may now be resolved after a gallbladder removal and I'm currently doing very well. I still may need another surgery for an unrelated thing, and I hope to finish up on a possible physical product I'd like to release soon. Between these things, videos may remain less frequent than usual until the end of the year.

On another note, my second son was born this past week! Things are good.

Thanks for watching! -Ben

The visual explanation using liquid Ph indicator was incredible.

BRUH. I'm still watching but this video gets more impressive the more I watch. SO MANY IDEAS I want to try now

Who else wants a flow battery video with pumps?! I do i do

I feel like the title of this video REALLY does not do the video justice. What you have in the 40 minute presentation is like 10 different videos I would have liked to see. I only watched the whole thing because I know your channel and how amazing your videos are. I just worry you're not getting the full exposure of the greatness that is littered throughout the video.

There is such a ridiculously dense amount of material in here. Total gold. Keep em coming!

Came for simple hydrolysis, was wowed by carbon felt electrodes, iron extraction, home-made infinite batteries, and hydrogen gas generators!

Extremely educational and interesting video. Love your enthusiasm, take care of your health. Keep up the good work.

I have come back to this video 4 times now, each time learning a little more. Thank you for condensing such a huge topic into a very digestible tutorial. Keep up the great work!

Chemist here. A nice intro to electrochemistry and clever use of materials. At about 8:10 you say "actually, everything that dissolves in water, splits into ions when it does so." You want to be careful with absolutes like that. That is true only of salts, some acids and some bases. Many materials do not ionize at all in water, such as sugars and alcohols, while some others ionize, but do not split, such as amino acids and proteins (search zwitterions if you are looking for a rabbit-hole). Pro tip: while handling caustic solutions such as aqueous sodium hydroxide don't use glass. Polyethylene or polypropylene would be greatly preferred. Glass corrodes fairly quickly in caustic, making sodium silicate. The process reduces the alkalinity of your solution and weakens the glass, a lose-lose proposition.

Dangerous blender use and "Do not breath this smoke" sending me back to the old Blendtech "Will it Blend" meme days.

As a Chemist i gotta say:

This is really well made, correct but simple explanations, good visuals, good pacing.

If i were a teacher, I'd love to usr parts of this video for teaching e. chem.

Love from Germany ❤

48V nominal energy storage with homemade flow batteries would be a huge boon to personal off-grid energy... even if it's a low/slow power transfer it could supplement lithium battery solutions when tied into a DC bus bar. The most expensive part of solar solutions today is battery storage.

Having a simple walkthrough and calculations for potential storage would be great.

Make acid from water and electricity to dissolve rock… Such a great way of showing that energy is never created or destroyed, only converted, and matter and energy are the same :)

I’ve been watching DIY chemistry videos on YouTube for 10 yrs… HOW IS THIS THE BEST DEMONSTRATION and explanation I’ve ever seen regarding hydrolysis?!
Just…. Outstanding work, Ben.
As always. 👏
