"Why do knife handles break? Mistakes that many people make — and how to avoid them"
In this video, we'll figure out why knives break in the handle — and why it's not bad glue or "weak wood" that's to blame, but elementary physics and design errors. Using my own example, I'll show you what my first handles looked like, what was wrong with them, and why they cracked years later.
We will discuss how the load is properly transferred from the blade to the handle, where critical stretching and compression zones occur, and why pseudo-bolsters and beautiful spacers only worsen the reliability of the knife.
Let's look at how the handles were made hundreds of years ago — without glue and "super materials", but so that they served for decades. I'll show you which bolster design really works, why the cage ring is important, and how to double the joint stiffness.
