The Best Sarah Jane Adventures Story

When people talk about their favourite story from The Sarah Jane Adventures, the Doctor Who/SJA crossover ‘Death of the Doctor’ is often mentioned. As much as I adore this story though, my personal favourite is actually the previous series' Doctor Who/SJA crossover, 'The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith'. To celebrate exactly 10 years since this story aired for the very first time, in this video essay I explain why it's my favourite couple of episodes from The Sarah Jane Adventures. I hope you enjoy hearing what I have to say.

A really great review. I agree with you, there does seem to be a Trickster story arc of sorts. I see what you mean about the Doctor's parting words to Sarah being the perfect ending to their story. It's interesting that the 11th Doctor seemed to connect more with Jo than Sarah - almost as if the SJA was simply being used as a vehicle for bringing Jo into New Who. Not that I'm complaining - I'm delighted whenever Classic companions return and it's wonderful that Katy Manning is reprising her role with Big Finish Audios. All that aside, I must say, when Sarah Jane got her own spin-off show, I was beeming from ear to ear and whenever I've been introducing friends to Dr Who, I mention her series too. :-)

Great video. I’m glad to see someone else who prefers Wedding over Death of The Doctor. Don’t get me wrong, I love Death of The Doctor but I prefer the Wedding episode more because it has those strong emotional beats with Sarah Jane. Her dilemma in choosing Peter or the world, The Doctor interacting with Clyde, Rani and Luke. The confrontation they have with the Trickster and the whole time loop situation. Plus Sarah and Peter are the ones who save the day in the end. The Trickster is still a great threat and there are so many cool threads which really creates a great story in this. Great character moments and good emotional scenes especially with Sarah and 10 saying goodbye and Peter sacrificing himself. It’s still a shame we’ll never get to see all those unmade stories, especially The Battle of Bannerman Road.

I have so many favourite episodes of SJA. Here are my top 10 (in order of when they first aired).

Warriors of Kudlak
Whatever happened to Sarah Jane?
The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith
The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith
The Nightmare Man (the only episode of anything from the whoniverse to actually frighten me as a child)
Death of the Doctor
The Empty Planet
Lost in Time
The Curse of Clyde Langer
The Man Who Never Was

Lost in Time & The Curse of Clyde Langer are my joint favourite.

‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ has no weak series. Every series is fantastic!

I think the trickster wouldve worked with the weeping angels
The trickster likes to feed of chaos by manipulating time this would huge amounts of time distortion energy and the weeping angles feed of time energy so it couldve been cool if the trickster and weeping angles had a mutually beneficial agreement to wreak havoc across time
