Im a ambulatory wheelchair user and still use hand controls 😂 it saves me so much pain some days

Have cerebral palsy, 70 years old now started driving at 21 (w/ HC) stop driving 3 years ago. My last vehicle was a Toyota Pickup '93 no airbags.   Cost of hand controls and installation was $1000. Miss it sometimes. They have so many better aids than 50 years back. I got my 1st wheelchair in 2000 wish I got it sooner even if it was only for wheelchair sports like basketball. Could not work anymore around the same time health issues. Wish I had more disable friends, most have moved away or lost touch or passed away. The greatest thing they have now is the computer can read out loud, and word processors,  it gets around my dyslexia They have so many better aids than 50 years back in the day they had no curb cut-outs few ramps. Nice to see!

I’ve installed controls in six cars over the years, I get them in the second hand market. As para I use Monarch controls. The one thing you can be assured of you’ll get little help from the market. They take advantage of their products so to squeeze insurance payouts.

I started using hand controls in 2009 I the UK. I collected my car from the dealership on the Friday and the ex drove it home. I was to have a familiarisation lesson on the Saturday. I couldn't wait. I went on the Friday drove about 5 to 6 miles and ended up at home. I sat in the car, called the company and said, don't worry about coming out, Im sorted and never saw them. Ive been driving with hand controls ever since. Collected my new car in the next few weeks

Thanks for showing how the driver's seat in the adapted van works!  😃I'm ambulatory but am a full-time wheelchair user when I'm out of my home.

I've just started driving occasionally after getting my first custom titanium chair last summer (TiLite ZRA 18"x16" with 25" rear wheels). Loading/unloading has been a major issue in rentals. By the time I figure out how to fit my chair in a van or walk around from loading it in the cargo part of a cargo van I'm so dizzy. I've had to sit for ages (dysautonomia + PPPD). By the end of a day running errands I was beat.

Being an Uber WAV (wheelchair accessible van) passenger is much easier because I'm able to transfer to the front passenger seat and the driver rolls my chair up the ramp and secures it.

Being able to wheel up a ramp and transfer with one or no steps to the driver's seat then spin around would be wonderful. I'm in Toronto with better transit (I think) than on the East Coast. So, I don't absolutely need a van. But when/if I get to having my own I'd like one with a ramp and swivel seat - but typical foot controls and the air bag.
