The surname at #1 is carried by Sikhs in India and Muslims in Pakistan. In 1947 a border cut that clan in two. The DNA says something no border could change.
We count down 15 Punjabi surnames from both sides of the border: Khatri names like Malhotra and Kapoor, Arora families of West Punjab, Saini and Kamboj, the Ramgarhia builders of the Uganda Railway, Ahluwalia and the Kapurthala state, the royal Sidhus and Brars of Patiala, Dhillon, Grewal, Sekhon and Gill, the Mohyal "Hussaini Brahmins," Arain and Gujjar, the Potohar clans Awan, Janjua, Khokhar and Gakhar, Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Sandhu clan, Bhatti and the legend of Dulla Bhatti, Randhawa, Bajwa and Virk, and a #1 that tells the story of all of Punjab. We also test the old theory that Jatts descend from the Scythians.
A note on accuracy: surnames are shared across communities and religions, so a surname alone does not determine anyone's DNA. Very few genetic studies focus on specific Punjabi clans; this video describes broad regional patterns, not clan-by-clan measurements. Family and community origin stories, including the Mohyal Karbala tradition, Arab-origin claims, links to Porus and the size of individual clans, are presented as tradition. Partition casualty estimates vary widely between historians. No community is ranked above another. Be careful with percentages from hobbyist calculators; they are not peer-reviewed.
