The CLINICAL SIMULATION EXAM (Respiratory Therapist Exam) has a 56% passing rate.
So about HALF of the Respiratory Therapy students don't become RTs because of that exam. The CSE is necessary to become a licensed RT.
You want to know why the CSE is so hard? Because they are like physician tests. We read the scenario, choose the right diagnostic tests, interpret the results, diagnose, and choose the right treatment. There are a total of 22 long scenarios that must be finished within a time limit of 4 hours (about 10 minutes each scenario). Some of those scenarios require many calulations, some of those scenarios require knowledge outside of the Respiratory therapist's scope of practice. If you choose a diagnostic test that would waste time, you will get negative points. If you choose a wrong answer, the problem branches out to an even longer scenario where you will waste more time trying to fix your mistake and you will get negative points. If you choose the wrong treatment, negative points.
Compare that to the easy multiple choice NCLEX, where the test stops when you've answered enough correctly and you pass, no negative points for your wrong answers.
