You articulated the absolute most succinct explanation of why this works so well - bravo! "You're not just watching comedians write what they think bad is, it's them writing what they think this guy would think good is"
the bad sets, the bad editing, the bad dialogue, it's all glorious. the foam tombstones blowing in the wind. the cat being thrown by visible hands through the doorway. Garth's insistence on mixing French into his sentences to sound cultured. I love it all so much
Funeral scene... Why are Dag's heels clicking like he's on a tile floor while he walks through the grass in the cemetery? They just reused the foley from the interior hospital shots for the graveyard. A million things about this show make it one of the best things ever from Britain.
It's the little things. Like how Dr Dagless can't even open the door to the sick kid's room in a way that looks natural because he stopped walking too far away from it.
This is the best reaction to Darkplace on YouTube and honestly it isn’t close. There is nothing more validating than listening to someone smarter than yourself express ideas that you had but didn’t have the ability to fully form and express in a coherent way. I don’t think I’ve ever pressed subscribe from just a single video before, but there we are. Thanks for making this and I hope you can lose your insecurity about whether what you are doing is entertaining -having seen this episode many times I found myself looking forward to your explanations and opinions and getting excited when you leaned forward to press pause because I knew there was some great insight coming lol. The whole thing about the layers and the comedy coming not from it being bad per se, but from the realistic depiction of someone talentless and arrogant making something that they genuinely believe is profound and genius. Thank you!
Finally an American that gets it. Loved how you picked up on so many of the tropes they used. I grew up in the 80's on shows like Sapphire and Steel and Hammer house of Horror. Darkside nails the aesthetic so well. Thanks for a great reaction.
I'm very impressed by your commentary. You're picking up on EVERY LITTLE THING and explaining it succinctly as crystal. You even predicted the coming overuse of slow motion.
I love how the writer is also the director and star, so he writes his character as the ultimate, perfect, infallible Marty Stu. Like Neil Breen, Tommy Wiseau and many many more before them. Every other character is just there to be an easy foil or to tell him how awesome he is. (Also Marenghi, Breen and Wiseau are amazing at writing female characters with enormous depth.)
One of the reasons why Giallo and a lot of cheapo 70s Euro horror was weirdly dubbed is that the movies were financed from several countries. Like every Jess Franco movie was a West German/Italian/Spanish production. If you were making a B-movie you'd want to maximize the audience, so the movie was dubbed into German before the German release etc. The actors were often a motley crew from all over the world (Dyanne Thorne, Lina Romay, Uschi Digard), all of them acting in their own language or some kind of pidgin hybrid. So there was really no need to record sound at the shoot. These countries tend to dub all movies anyway, but a big mainstream movie would have been shot in Germany, in German, for the German market, and then maybe exported to Italy where it was dubbed into Italian etc.
Also it's refreshing to see someone sitting in front of a wall not covered in Funkopops.
"It's so perfectly bad!" Best description of Darkplace I've heard. It's really fun to listen to someone with encyclopedic knowledge on a subject too! Best reaction to this show I've seen :)
