Soteriology 101 w/ Dr. Leighton Flowers

John Lennox explains why determinism (naturalistic or otherwise) does not compute with Christianity. God has given us libertarian free will and the ability to choose to repent and believe in Christ or not.

As a Chinese
I became a Christian after 7 years of living & rejecting Christ in US, not because I had a free will to choose, but because the Father drove me to His only Son in that night and then I began to experience the love of Christ & the love Christian brothers/sisters.
Btw, it took me many years of learning the providence and the holiness of God.!
God bless & thank you!

Big fan of John Lennox. The way he describes the depth and vastness of our Creator, and His love toward all humans ... it's a beautiful thing to sit and truly grasp. God bless you guys

The Bible says we are adopted. Do you not choose to adopt a child? He draws us to Him and gives us a new heart, a softened heart
and removes the hardened one. Hallelujah. Why is this so hard? It is the mercy of God alone.

I love his austere metaphors that take complex concepts and make them easier to digest.

One balanced comment was explained to me a few years ago. When we face the cross for salvation the call is 'whosoever will may come', for God is not willing that any should perish.
Then when we get saved + look back to the cross, 'chosen before the foundation of the world', also no one came to God unless they're drawn, and subsequently respond. We have free will to reject the wooing of our heart. It takes His wooing because in our sin we're spiritually dead and cannot understand the spiritual things of God. 'The natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God, for they are spiritually discerned'...
I think there's a balance + the extremes of either Calvanism or Arminianism should be avoided. There's merit + blessings in both.

After watching this, I listened to a few of John Lennox's teachings. I never heard of him until now. Very interesting fellow, I have to say.

Edwards defines the will as “the mind choosing”. This is unique for the simple reason that up until this point, nobody had bothered to refine a careful definition of the will. Everyone assumed that “will” was self-defining. Our choices, according to Edwards, are not determined by the will itself but by the mind. Our choices are determined by what we think is most desirable at any given moment. But why does the mind choose one thing over another? This is where Edwards introduces the idea of “motives”. We choose one thing over another because our mind chooses what it thinks is best at that moment.

God called me, I decided to follow him. Thats what i experienced. God was so patient with me during the times i was hardening my heart and kept running from him.

everytime i was alone in my bedroom, anxious and had breakdowns...i could always hear the Holy Spirit telling me to pray, read the Bible, and go back to church. i know the truth but i was hardening my heart.

but in His faithfulness and patience, he redeemed my soul last year. from then on, i decided to follow him and being intentional with my walk with Him.

My father was born in Antrim county, North Ireland and I was also born in a Christian home such as John Lennox. His story is so interesting as my life was with the beauty of my father and Dr. Lennox.
