Five and a half minutes of careful hand panning still left black sand mixed through my concentrate and when I checked the material I had washed away, there was a surprising amount of fine gold in it.
So I put the same 59.49 grams of mixed mine material back together and ran it through the Gold Drop.
The Gold Drop, invented by John Richmond of Sluice Goose Industries, is designed to separate microfine gold from black sand using controlled water flow. For this cleanup, I fed the concentrate through the funnel, reduced the flow from 0.5 to approximately 0.35 gallons per minute, and watched the gold collect in the vertical cleanout tube while the lighter material moved into the waste side.
From loading the material to opening the cleanout gate, the process took roughly two minutes.
The result was much cleaner gold than I had been able to produce by hand, without repeatedly chasing the same black sand around the pan or wondering how much fine gold had escaped with it.
This is one of the most practical uses I’ve found for the Gold Drop, especially when dealing with fine mine gold that is extremely difficult to clean without losing some of it.

I’ve been chasing gold since I was 11 years old. I’ve sold natural gold, nuggets, rare specimens and paydirt since 1999. Nowadays I'm lucky that I get to follow my dreams and mine full time. My hands-on experience spans gold prospecting, hard-rock mining, metal detecting, gold recovery, ore processing and crystallized gold specimens. I've also appeared on National Geographic’s Meltdown, demonstrating how gold recovery works in the real world.
On this channel, I follow gold from the first signal on the metal detectors to the final result - discovering pockets and veins, extracting gold-bearing quartz, testing equipment and recovery methods, crushing and processing ore, cleaning specimens and establishing what the recovered gold actually weighs and what makes a natural specimen valuable.
If you watch gold mining, gold prospecting, gold panning, metal detecting, ore processing or gold recovery, subscribe for real discoveries, measured results and the complete story behind the gold!
