♦From the Doggerland migrants, to the Celts, to the Romans, successive waves of newcomers had transformed England each time. With Rome’s departure, England was left undefended from new waves of settlers and warriors who would be just as transformative as those who came before.

In this video, the former Roman province of Britannia will be reforged by generations of invaders into a new nation of England. Angles, Saxons, Vikings, and more will reshape the land and its people, giving rise to famous figures like Arthur, Alfred, and Aethelstan whose names would reverberate through English history forever after. More episodes are coming!

Damn I wonder if that peasant woman who scolded king Alfred would have ever imagined the story of her burnt cakes would still be spoken of 1,300 years later

Interesting cycle of raiders becoming settlers becoming farmers, and getting raided. Rinse & repeat.

This is cool. this is a time where you don't see a lot of English History on youtube. usually it goes from the Romans left to either 1066 or Rork's Drift.

Saxons had already began settling on the east coast of Britain during the Roman period; they were Foederati (mercenaries) hired by the Romans. Britannia was actually the most expensive Roman province to maintain and defend, requiring the largest legion to population ratio -- larger than anywhere else in the Empire.

I think it's worth mentioning recent DNA evidence surrounding the Anglo-Saxon settlement - this showed that actually a large majority of the DNA of people in Britain today (as much as 60-90% in the South-East) comes from the native Romano-Britons, suggesting that the settlement was less violent and involved less displacement than previously thought, even if culturally little of the Romano-Britons survived in England

18:07 “Alfred wanted everyone in his kingdom to be no less than a day’s travel from one of these forts.” Do you mean, “no MORE than a day’s travel?”

Thank-you for emphasising King Offa, he has become the Most Underrated Anglo-Saxin King in Modern Times. The first to be Known as King of the English and even Held his own against the mighty Charlemagne.

Although Celtic peoples lost much of their demography to Germanic & Latin speakers they have greatly contributed to the ethnogenesis of these groups' offshoots. Halloween also stems from a Celtic cult.

There's an insanely well-crafted Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Danish history content by Schwerpunkt in the dedicated playlists that I strongly recommend
