Welcome to the Disney Outlands DETOURS: A companion show to the Disney Outlands podcast, featuring in-depth conversations with special guests about the behind-the-scenes making of Disney productions that you can’t find on Disney Plus or Hulu in the United States.

In this first Detour episode, Leif Bradshaw talks with DAVID L. SNYDER about his role as Production Designer for the Disney movies "My Science Project" (1985) and "Super Mario Bros." (1993). Outside of Disney, you may know David’s work on "Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure" (1985), "Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey" (1991), "Back to School" (1986), "Demolition Man" (1993), "Class Act" (1992), "Strange Brew" (1983), and "Blade Runner" (1982), the last of which earned him an Academy Award® nomination for Best Art Direction.

David discusses bringing writer-director Jonathan R. Betuel’s science-fiction comedy adventure script to life in "My Science Project", as well as bonding with producer Jonathan Taplin and the young-adult stars of the film, how he went about customizing the cherry-red 1968 Pontiac GTO for the film, shooting on location in California and Arizona, working with special effects artists John Scheele ("Tron") and Michael Lantieri (Academy Award® winner, "Jurassic Park") to manifest the movie’s most thrilling scenes like the car chase sequence and the battle with the T-Rex, and the changes he saw at the Disney studio when Frank Wells and Michael Eisner replaced Ron Miller as president and CEO in the middle of production. David also shines a light on how he later re-teamed with "My Science Project" stars Dennis Hopper and Fisher Stevens on "Super Mario Bros.", and how that movie began a lasting friendship with actor Bob Hoskins.

This conversation, chronicling the incredible journey of a Hollywood craftsman, is packed with funny, unbelievable, and heartfelt stories, perfect for any ’80s/’90s film buff!
