I built a 160Nm Tongsheng TSDZ16 mid-drive e-bike from the ground up using a Saracen Mantra LSL Elite, a 48V 30A long-range battery — then put it head-to-head against the Bafang BBSHD. This is a full build, real-world test, and honest comparison to see whether the TSDZ16 really is the most underrated mid-drive motor right now.

I decided to get a shop bought ebike (Specialized Vado) for running errands and commuting. I never had a single problem with the Bafang or Tongsheng setups but this Specialized has been to the bike shop twice for warranty repairs within 3 months of ownership.
At least if something goes south with a Bafang or Tongsheng there are replacement parts available at a reasonable price but with shop bought you basically have to go to a bike shop to get it fixed, if you're out of warranty you're going to be hit with a big bill, if you're in warranty you won't see your bike for weeks.
Replacement batteries for shop bought ebikes are also extortionate. The only reason I opted for a shop bought was because it had a carbon belt drive, which in my opinion is the best for commuting in British weather and it was on the cyclescheme so it gets heavily discounted. Otherwise I would've just stuck to the Bafang or Tongsheng motors.
