Consoles must follow three rules:

1. Have physical media for games.
2. Exclusives.
3. Be more affordable than PCs.

Fail to follow those rules?

Around half of the games sold on Nintendo hardware are Nintendo published games, an overwhelming majority of these sales are at full price too, Nintendo makes a lot more money from first party sales than they do from licensing fees from third parties.

Nintendo has something with their exclusives that the other companies don’t — brand recognition. Anyone, gamers and non-gamers, can recognize a Nintendo mascot icon. Not so much for Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo exclusives are also accessible for everyone and at any point of their respective franchises. You don’t have to play from the very beginning or require to learn complex controls. You can pick up and play most of them whether you play everyday or jump back in months later.

One company makes these decisions in Japan, the other moved their gaming department to the US.

Only one of them still thinks about the value of the brand, the other is lost in the search for short term profits they can canabalize decades of brand value for.

I grew up on PlayStation, was always a PlayStation kinda guy with the occasional Nintendo thrown in the mix. This generation I currently own an Xbox Series X, Steam Deck and about to buy a Switch 2. I've had a launch PS5 since day 1 and the 30th Anniversary but played very little and didn't end up keeping. There's just no worthwhile games and PSN keeps going up in price and offers little.

Nintendo has always had that mindset and didn’t flinch when Xbox and Sony tried to paint exclusives as unnecessary in order to get them to put their games on the other consoles. Love Nintendo and I hope they always stand their ground on this. Do their own thing and don’t worry about everyone else.

Always remember: Even when Sony ported over Spider-Man and God of War to PC, they still refused to make them available on XBOX and the Nintendo Switch.
Even back then, they themselves still knew that in the end, exclusives matter.

Because people and players, ultimely buy the consoles for their games, not the specifications and how powerful they are, and exclusive games that are available only in one console, are the oldest incentive to buy a specific console.

Developing OOT Remake exclusively for the Switch 2 wasn't just a way to entice Switch 1 holdouts to migrate to the current gen, it was a refusal to allow the game's development to be held back by the hardware limitations of a console that's nearly a decade old now. This is likely the last shot at an OOT Remake we'll ever get and I'd rather it not be gimped by old hardware.

Nintendo has its own ecosystem , with its own style, mechanics , software and hardware. As Nintendo games are fun and more for casual gamer it doesnt make much sense to sell their exclusives outside of Their console as Sony,PC and Xbox are mostly competitive player.

The reason for exclusives is for companies to have there own identity thats different from the competition, and with competition you get more creativity and more creativity means we get better games. So yes exclusives are important

If Nintendo stopped making consoles and just made games for other systems, all innovation in the industry would be gone since the other guys end up taking ideas from Nintendo.
