In this episode of Farmers Wife Homestead, I’m making an old-fashioned dinner many of us will remember — Savoury Mince.

It’s one of those simple meals that turned up on Kiwi tables again and again. Not because it was fancy, but because it was filling, affordable, and just worked. Today I’m sharing how I make it better than the orginal recipe, that let's face it. Used to scare us! This recipe has loads of flavour and is sure to win at the dinner table but also the back pocket.

This episode is the third episode of my new series Old-Fashioned Dinners (That Still Work Today) — a collection of familiar meals, cooked slowly, in a normal kitchen, with real life happening around it.

That looks lovely. My mum would serve it with Yorkshire pudding, mash and more vegetables- excellent on a cold winter's night. A real 'rib sticker' of a meal in cold weather. Yum.

Your savoury mince on "toast" looks delicious. Growing up in Australia, my grandparents ran a sheep station. It was a staple for breakfast, lunch and tea for all the shearers and station hands. There was nothing watery or grey about it. Love the foccaccia twist. Nan was a bit ahead of her time for the 50's and spread the toast with garlic butter.

A tip for working with wet doughs Stacey is SWH. Soaking wet hand. Swear by it.

Being from the U.S., I’ve not heard of this before. My mom would take leftover roast beef and chop it up, then put it in with the gravy she had made. She would then add diced potatoes and carrots to this and simmer until the vegetables were cooked. I loved this on biscuits or yeast rolls. What you call “mince” is what we refer to as ground beef, so I would imagine the taste is very similar to what I mentioned using roast beef. It really looks delicious and I can see why your husband loves it! And the focaccia———the crowning touch! I love watching you cook and getting new ideas. 😊

hi Stace. I’m an Aussie girl about the same age as you. My mum was the guru of watery, grey scrambled eggs and watery tasteless savoury mince. Both those things struck fear deep within me. After decades, I am cooking scrambled eggs just right, and you have inspired me to venture into the savoury mince realm! Cheers xx

Very similar to mine, I love it with mashed potatoes or rice. I love making toasted sandwiches with it the next day.

About 50 years ago I was in a supermarket checkout queue a young woman in front of me commented her mum said she should cook mince to save money. She complained it was flavourless and grey. My mother never taught me to cook but as the kitchen was in the middle of our farmhouse by osmosis I learnt that you must always brown the heck out meat. 😊this was often breakfast on toast and I still love it. Lesson never forgotten 😂😂

Love savoury mince, this looks delicious.
This is giving me an idea of letting it cool down and wrapping spoonfuls in filo pastry and then cooking in the air fryer 😊

Wow, it's always surprising to me how similar different cultures can be. I make this into a soup. Add whole tomatoes and tomato sauce. Instead of gravy, I use broth. Makes a great soup.

Haven't had good savory mince for years.. leftovers can be wrapped in pastry for a pastie and put mashed potatoes on top for a shepherd pie..

I do various versions especially for my 90 year old mum who i care for...she loves it because its soft and I can batch freeze small portions
