Wheel of Prog - Ranking our favorite Desert Island Albums with Mike Portnoy

The Prog Report

During Neal Morse's Morsefest 2026 weekend outside of Nashville on August 20th-22nd, the Prog Report crew got together with our friend Mike Portnoy for a fun in-person Wheel of Prog ranking our favorite desert island albums. The 10-person panel each had 2 of their personal choices on the wheel. Being in the same room made for a fun and chaotic episode that we hope you enjoy. This one will work much better watching than only listening (side note: halfway through, one of the cameras stopped working).

Host: Roie Avin
Panel: Mike Portnoy, Christian Rios, Kyle Fagala, Kyle Graves, Bosco Aguilar, Daniel Levy, Rafa Barbosa, Vic Giol, Jon Fiala

Not only is it awesome that Portnoy participates in stuff like this but the fact that he enjoys himself so much doing it is why we love him...and the fact he is an amazing drummer for so many great bands. 😂

This was such an insanely fun episode! Love the whole crew. Thank you to you all! A couple of albums I have to do my homework on! 🤍

Close to the Edge is an easy S tier. One of the best prog rock albums ever.

Portnoy ended up going to see Rush for a second time and they did in fact play a different setlist than the one he already seen in NYC. There’s footed of him air drumming and stuff 😂Then he ended up meeting Anika and took a pic with her. 🔥

"I don't know them, and by that reason alone, it should be D." "You're just as professional as him." LOLOL

What an (in my humble opinion) hilariously inaccurate and beautifully chaotic ranking show! Many thanks to “Roistian”, the Professionals, the Kyles, the Brazilians and the Old Guys. I’ve had an absolute blast. Please, more of the same!

Of the genre's three most consistently highest regarded albums (In the Court of the Crimson King, Close To the Edge, and DSotM), only one (the most mainstream one, unsurprisingly) made S tier. To many, KC's is the most essential/significant of them all and yet is curiously absent.

At the 38:00 mark I was at the show with Spock's Beard and Dream Theater. This was in 2000. The Pittsburgh venue probably had like 100 people in it I swear. Spock's Beard was killing it and then DT played Scenes from start to finish. You want to talk about an amazing night.

Portnoy saying that all the albums in 97 INCLUDING HIS OWN DT album Falling Into Infinity. I must be honest, I LOVE New Millenium and You Not Me on that album. I think Falling Into Infinity is weaker, especially since they were kind of forced to follow a certain path by producers, but I still love some of those tracks. New Millenium might actually be my favorite DT song of all time

Absolutely brilliant episode guys. Of course everyone is completely wrong but a great episode nonetheless. 😂 Any episode that gets me shouting at the screen is a winner with me!
