Pete Hegseth says he is rebuilding a warrior culture. At Valley Forge, George Washington built one — and the man he handed the job to was everything Hegseth says he does not want near the Pentagon.

Washington's army in the winter of 1777–78 was not fit for purpose. Muskets rusted, bayonets were missing, companies existed only on paper, and every regiment drilled to a different standard. Washington didn't ask for new uniforms. He asked for someone who knew how to fight — and got a flamboyant Prussian captain, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, recruited by Benjamin Franklin, who inflated his rank in the introduction. Steuben reached camp in February 1778 and within two weeks was acting inspector general.

Steuben took a hundred men and taught them to march at seventy-five steps a minute, then a hundred and twenty; to load fast and reload faster; to charge with the bayonet; to move in a compact column instead of a ragged line a mile long. He swore at them in three languages and explained the reason behind every order. In May 1778 his soldiers demonstrated European precision. In June at Monmouth Court House they held their ground under British fire and bayonets. In 1779 he wrote the regulations that remained the Army's manual for decades — and the Army's Blue Book, published in October 2024, is built on them.

Now set that beside a Pentagon reshaping how soldiers are taught and what their commanders expect them to accomplish, on the theory that appearance is capability. Hegseth has said he wants drone operators who are manly and well dressed. He has promised that a new uniform will bolster recruiting and readiness. He has the department's own history wrong: the Department of War became the Department of the Army in 1947, and the Department of Defense was created two years later to house the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Meanwhile, the actual revolution in this moment's warfare — drones, AI targeting, satellites — gets handed to outside names with no doctrine behind them.

Whatever is wrong with American military readiness, the man who fixed it at Valley Forge would not have cleared the door.
