Today I'm taking a very special walk along the Melbourne coastline! 🇦🇺🌊

In this video, I take my first walk through Hampton, descending along scenic trails to the bay. At one point, you'll feel as if you're not in the city, but somewhere in a protected natural area.

We'll reach the Hampton coastline and continue our long walk along the bay, exploring the beaches, coastal trails, and beautiful views.

Then we'll head to Brighton, stroll along its beach, and reach the famous, colorful Brighton Bathing Boxes—one of Melbourne's most recognizable landmarks. 🏖️

But the walk doesn't end there! We'll continue along the coast along beautiful trails offering stunning views of Melbourne, passing cozy cafes and restaurants, and experiencing the unique atmosphere of life by the bay.

Our route will conclude at Elwood.

We ended up walking a truly incredibly long route – from Hampton through Brighton to Elwood. It was a true stroll along the Melbourne coast: nature, beaches, beautiful views, urban architecture, and the atmosphere of Port Phillip Bay. ❤️

🏛️ Interesting Facts

🌊 Hampton

Hampton developed as a district associated with both agriculture and recreation by the bay. In the 1840s and 1850s, there were market gardens and orchards here, supplying Melbourne with fruit and vegetables, and later the coast became a popular destination for trips and picnics.

Interesting fact: the railway first reached Brighton Beach in the 1860s, and in 1887 the line was extended to Sandringham. This greatly contributed to the development of coastal areas and made trips to the bay much more accessible.

Brighton

Brighton's most famous bathing boxes have a history dating back to the 19th century. The first such structures appeared along the Brighton coastline as early as the 1860s. They were associated with the strict beach etiquette of the time and the requirement to change clothes indoors.

What's particularly interesting is that the current location of these boxes didn't appear immediately. In 1934, many of the boxes were relocated or assembled together on Dendy Street Beach as part of a large-scale coastal improvement project.

Today, these colorful boxes have become one of Melbourne's most recognizable images.

🌿 Elwood

Elwood also has an interesting past. Much of the area was associated with Elwood Swamp, a wetland. Its drainage began in 1889, gradually opening the way for active residential development in the area. Today, the Elwood Canal remains as a remnant of this history. Elwood Beach also became a true sports and recreation center in the early 20th century. A lifesaving club, a sailing club, a bowling club, tennis courts, and other sports facilities were established here.

Elwood Life Saving Club was founded in 1912 and is considered the oldest lifesaving club in Port Phillip Bay.
